My son celebrated his 12th birthday on Saturday, and my super awesome cousin Patricia helped me plan a whole day’s worth of surprise activities: a trip to a trampoline playground, a stop at an indoor arcade and bowling hall, lunch at a saloon-style restaurant, and a visit to a puppy shop where you could actually play with the puppies and pet them (so, basically, my son’s idea of heaven).

Last night’s Oscars awards ceremony was marked by a great deal of sociopolitical discourse, primarily in response to widespread criticism regarding the Academy’s failure to acknowledge great performances by actors of color (as summarized by the #OscarsSoWhite social media campaign) and, moreover, the overarching issue of institutionalized racism within the film industry.
There’s truth at the core of the adage “You have to dress for the job you want” — and it applies to every part of the employment process, from securing a gig to being promoted, earning the respect of colleagues, transitioning into different fields, and becoming a top-tier executive.
