What I Wore On Day 5 Of New York Fashion Week SS14
My lovely readers, I’ve been trying my hardest to keep you abreast of all my comings-and-goings during New York Fashion Week, but I have to admit that the breakneck pace of this week has left me a bit discombobulated — and, as a result, I’m playing major catch-up here. Between the madness that’s NYFW, some nutty writing deadlines, my son going back to school on Monday, and all the everyday domestic madness (check homework, cook dinner, wash dishes, and la di da di), and you’re looking at one tired lady. Anyhow, I’ll be working overtime during the next few days to fill you in on everything you might have missed — but first: a quick “what I wore” post!
The weather in New York City has been unpredictable to say the least, with temperatures yo-yoing more than Oprah’s weight in the ’90s. On Monday, it hit the 60s in the early morning and lingered around the 70 degree mark throughout most of the day (today, meanwhile, it’s shooting back up to 90 degrees). Anyhow, since it was a bit chillier on Monday, I decided I’d finally wear something other than a dress or skirt! And, since leather plays such a pivotal part in the Fall 2013 fashion landscape, I went straight for a pair of Rachel Rachel Roy leggings that have a leather-like texture but not the weight and thickness that we associate with leather pants. They also have these gold zippers along the ankles that add a bit of a rocker feel to them.
I’d been itching to wear my new black-and-cobalt-blue Shoe Cult by Nasty Gal Reaction Booties (you might remember I wrote about them last month). They retail for $158 at NastyGal.com and they kick more behind than Bruce Lee in Enter the Dragon. Here’s a close-up of the shoes I took while waiting for the Concept Korea show to start on Monday:
Once I decided on the shoes, the choice of tops became pretty self-evident. I went with a long, free-flowing Chloe K. top (I bought it recently at Marshall’s for just $15) that’s a cobalt shade and features a rounded high-low hemline, as well as faux black patent leather accents along the shoulders. Because the top is pretty sheer, I wore a basic black tank under it (gotta keep things PG-13, folks!). Next, I added a black lace motorcycle jacket from Mossimo, which I purchased at Target for $29.99.
And then, of course, once I had my color scheme and my leather-and-lace motif, I piled on my beloved accessories: a black fedora from H&M ($17.99), the medieval-looking Guinevere Draped Chainmail Bib Necklace from Mixology NYC ($350 at MixologyNYC.com), the more modern and space-themed silver Mixology NYC Barbarella Galaxy Podlet earrings, and a combination of gunmetal, black, and silver-toned elastic snake chain bracelets with spike charms from k20 by Karen Ko (I plucked pieces from two separate Avant Rock Spike Bracelet Set stacks, each of which contains seven gold-, black-, gunmetal-, and silver-toned bracelets and retails for $65 at Shop.k2obykarenko.com). Last but, not least, I slipped on a domed silver ring with faceted edges from Alexis Bittar.

Once I had the outfit together, I just created a smoky eye look and an edgy pink lip, and I was good to go! Here’s one last shot of me having a “Smooth Criminal” moment:
