What I Wore On Day 2 Of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week SS13
For the second day of New York Fashion Week, I tried to create a look infused with a bit of ’70s funk, a statuesque and classic femininity reminiscent of ancient Greece, and a modern emphasis on asymmetry and seemingly discordant elements arranged in a harmonious way. To accomplish that, I approached Cheap Monday’s Eyeoto Dress ($80 at Karmaloop.com) as the foundation. The forest green, 100% viscose mini dress features 3/4-length sleeves, a string tie at the waist, and a sheer overlay that drapes over one side of the bodice in a column-like manner and extends all the way to the floor, creating a novel effect via the dramatic difference in the length of the frock’s primary hemline and that of the fluid top panel. I immediately loved the rich, wood nymph color of the dress and the Aphrodite-esque effect created by the sheer top panel. In keeping with the Grecian goddess theme, I accessorized my hair with a Colette Malouf headband (purchased at a sample sale in NYC) that features braided, malleable wire wrapped in an ombré fabric that moves from shades of golden olive and moss to dark hunter green.
To give the outfit a sense of whimsy, I opted for my Jeffrey Campbell Lita ankle booties ($159.95 at Solestruck.com), which feature tapestry-like uppers with a paisley print in shades of tan, wine, black, olive, forest green, chestnut brown, and peachy pink. The shoes feature a 5″ wooden heel (yes, major height boost!) and a hidden 2″ platform, and they boast a ’70s-influenced shape thanks to the pronounced, square-ish toe. I then piled on my beloved accessories — starting with a Totomoto Australia necklace featuring gold-plated butterflies linked together in an acute triangle formation. Since the Totomoto necklace is practically a breastplate, I kept the rest of the jewelry simple, stacking some golden sequin-covered Amrita Singh bangles on one arm and opting for a simple pair of House of Harlow 1960 Antler Hoop Earrings ($110 at Endless.com), which feature overlapping, branch-like strips along their hollow interior, thereby working with the naturalistic elements of the outfit: the dark green color of the dress, the butterfly necklace, and the wreath-like look of the headband.
And, since I adore the way forest green and deep burgundy look together, I rocked my new Baume & Mercier Linea 10036 27mm watch (which was graciously gifted to me by the high-end timepiece brand’s publicity firm). The watch is so feminine and sharp that it almost resembles a bracelet, particularly thanks to the combination of the dainty round dial, featuring a quartz face and stainless steel case, and the wrap-around, glossy, burgundy-colored leather strap (which you can exchange with a double or single strap of a different color depending on your destination and your ensemble).
