What I Wore — Egyptian-Tinged Bohemian Style With An Art Deco Twist
I’m not always the timeliest of people — for instance, I just mailed my father his Christmas present last week, which speaks to the ludicrous “island style” time table by which we operate in my family (side note: he’s been known to send birthday presents a month after the date has elapsed, so one could argue that I got it from him!). That being said, I’m always battling my inner procrastinator and, most of the time, I do emerge the victor, putting on my horse blinders so that, in true New York form, I can be on go-go-go mode. Alas, procrastination got the best of me when it comes to this post, which is about two months late. But, hey, I’m going with a better-late-than-never attitude on this one, and hoping you enjoy this post even if it is a bit tardy!
As you can see from the photos above, these are some behind-the-scenes snaps shot during the taping of a Telemundo New York segment centered on hair jewelry. In the segment, I talked about how one of the biggest trends for Fall/Winter 2013 was very ornate, almost Baroque-inspired hair looks, with luxurious headbands and barrettes incorporating crystals, pearls, lace details, cabochon stons, spikes, and studs, and een gemstones. In the segment, we showcased some stunning hair accessories — from the epic Virgins, Saints & Angels Evil Queen Crown to various beaded headbands from Deepa Gurnani, spiked headbands from BCBGMAXAZRIA and Topshop, a pink pearl-trimmed headband from H&M, and much more (as you’ll see in the last picture above). Three adorable models had their hair styled by celebrity hair stylist Carlos Vera (who is simply amazing), and they all showed off some glamorous hair accessories while Vera spoke about how girls can style their manes to bring out the beauty of the chosen accessories.
In keeping with the theme, then, I wore the River Island Art Deco Diamante Stretch Head Band (which I ordered from ASOS.com), which features two gunmetal-colored chains meant to circle the head, essentially hugging the forehead and, along the side, draped gold and gunmetal chains, a fan-shaped gold metal accent with faceted edges to create the desired pleated effect and inset clear rhinestones running vertically along the raised edges, and several clear crystal stations featuring clusters of faceted stones in round, rectangular, teardrop, and marquis shapes. To make the piece look even more glam, Carlos Vera worked the front section fo my hair into this massive French braid that ran from one side of my head to the next and he added some volume at the crown for a slight bump effect.
As for the rest of the outfit, the main element was, of course, LA Boutique’s Ikat Lust Dress, which I bought from Karmaloop.com. The dress is so much fun because it features a basic black sleeveless shell with triangular cut-outs along the sides, just slightly above the hips, and an above-the-knee hemline, but then these panels of long, sheer, colorful fabric are woven along the sides so that they shoot out right below the waist and circle around the back, creating a high-low hemline. It’s almost impossible to wear this dress without wanting to twirl the ikat print fabric along the sides! Since it was pretty chilly outside, I wore the dress with black tights and then put on a pair of black high-heeled, Jean-Michel Cazabat ankle boots that feature tan leather strips along the vamp for contrast, D-rings through which to loop the black front laces, a built-in platform, and a treacherously high heel (which I love as a vertically challenged gal!).
On the accessories front, I went for a major statement with a Fiona Paxton necklace that I felt worked with the Bohemian vibe I was coveting, but also added a bit of an Egyptian feel and paired that with small hoop earrings with a cross accent from House of Harlow 1960. Other than that, I wore justa few Amrita Singh bangles and a brass-toned ring from Virgins, Saints & Angels featuring an etched cross along the center.
As far as makeup goes, I wore some shadows from the Urban Decay Naked palette and winged black liner and then brightened up the look with Illamasqua’s Blaze lipstick, an ultra saturated orange shade.
