Top 10 Best-Dressed Celebs At The 2014 Emmy Awards

The 2014 Emmy Awards red carpet was like a peppermint starlight mint candy — refreshing and sweet but typified primarily by red and white numbers. The number of scarlet, crimson, and coral red dresses was astounding, with everyone from Giuliana Rancic to Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Mindy Kaling, Christina Hendricks, January Jones, Claire Danes, Heidi Klum, Minnie Driver, Uzo Aduba, and Octavia Spencer all donning gowns in this hue. Although not quite as prominent, the number of white dresses was also formidable, with Anna Chlumsky, Sofia Vergara, Julianna Hough, Padma Lashki,Camila Alves, and Kristen Wiig all favoring this shade. Sure, there were plenty of metallic ensembles as well – from Amy Poehler’s silver Theia dress to Hayden Panettiere’s Lorena Sarbu gown — but red and white were the color stories of the evening.

Trends aside, here’s a look at the celebrities that wowed on the red carpet (whether they matched it or not!).

LIZZY CAPLAN

The Masters of Sex actress titillated and excited as she gracefully floated along the red carpet in a two-toned Donna Karan Atelier dress with a halter neckline, triangular cut-outs along the sides, an open back that scooped way down to reveal the oh-so-sensuous curve right above her bum, and a stunning train. Black and white pairings always feel chic but, in this case, the contrast created by the fitted black front and the flowing, ethereal white train is awe-inspiring.

CAMILA ALVES

Matthew McConaughey’s gorgeous bride once again turned heads on the red carpet when she appeared alongside her hubby in this Zuhair Murad gown, featuring a sheer bace and white trimmings that create elaborate geometric shapes reminiscent of papel picado creations. The three-quarter length sleeves and bateau neckline, the latter featuring playful triangular motifs as opposed to standard curved or straight lines, gave the gown an elegant and refines air, while the intricate patterns made it a show-stopper.

SOFIA VERGARA

Bombshell alert! A red carpet veteran, this colombiana tends to favor bright shades like turquoise, magenta, and red, so it was refreshing to see her opt for a crisp white gown and still emerge as the belle of the ball. The strapless Roberto Cavalli number hugged Sofia’s body in all the right places (just like she likes her dresses to do!), accentuating that Coke bottle figure we all alternatively admire and envy. Silver accents, meanwhile, create figure-flattering illusions and divert the gaze upwards to Vergara’s  visage.

JANUARY JONES

The Mad Men star is a fashionista in her own right and that often means that her adventurous, risk-taking spirit leads to as many stellar moments as it does disappointing or outright baffling ones. Fortunately, last night’s gamble paid off in spades as she dominated the red gown posse in a Prabal Gurung ball gown with a fitted, strapless bodice and a voluminous skirt that boasted a higher hemline along the front, thereby allowing Jones to show off her strappy heels, and lower hemlines along the folded, origami-esque sides and the extravagant train. The fabric’s slightly textured pattern also helped to make the gown feel modern and chic.

SARAH HYLAND

I love when young stars look glamorous on the red carpet while keeping their looks age-appropriate and 23-year-old Sarah Hyland showed precisely how to accomplish this feat with a voluminous coral red skirt and white halter crop top designed by Christian Siriano. The combination felt playful and flirty, especially when paired with a high, slightly mussy bun.

KATE MARA

The House of Cards actress has nailed it on the red carpet on many an occasion, and she definitely did so last night, pairing an edgy cut and moody makeup with an ethereal, white J. Mendel gown featuring an elaborately draped bodice and a sheer panel along the chest adorned with white pearls and black Swarovski crystals that together created a floral pattern. The layered skirt with its delicate knife pleats also gave the dress and unusual quality that made it all the more perfect for Mara.

JULIE BOWEN

It’s very difficult to pull off a printed dress on the red carpet, but gutsy Julie Bowen made it work in a floral Peter Som number with a plunging neckline and banded collar.

MICHELLE DOCKERY

The Downton Abbey star’s Rosie Assoulin gown was unlike any other garment on the red carpet. At its core, this is a fitted column dress, but it incorporates some rather modern elements, from the color-blocked, overlapping panels of fabric along the bodice to the cheeky cut-out above the waist and the draped, petal-like panels along the sides of the skirt, which once again revealed strips of cobalt blue, grasshopper green, and petal pink.

JULIANNA MARGULIES

The Good Wife star tends to favor simple yet elegant dresses and she’s been firmly devoted to Narciso Rodriguez for quite a few years now. She again placed her fashion fate in the designer’s hands and he delivered her onto the best-dressed list with a shimmering column gown featuring a grand ombré effect, with the black beading along the bodice gradating into a moody shade of gray. Simplicity at its finest!

KATHERINE HEIGL

There’s a vintage glamour to the Parisian silk, golden nectar-colroed John Hayles dress donned by Katherine Heigl thanks to the high, queen-like collar which was paired with a risqué plunging neckline to create that delightful tension between old and new, traditional and modern.
