The Beauty Look At Creatures of the Wind AW16 Show Was Inspired By NYC Latinas!
Rosario Dawson, Judy Reyes, Ana Ortiz, Zoe Saldana, and Adrienne Bailon would all approve. Mark Carrasquillo, the key makeup artist for NARS Cosmetics at the Creatures of the Wind AW16 show, designed a look that paid homage to the bold and confident attitude exuded by New York City’s young Latina women. Carrasquillo described his muse as someone who “is really confident and likes herself” and who “doesn’t entertain the makeup tricks “contour, foundation and power, [but] goes straight for a strong lip.”
The model’s complexions, then, were left clean and moisturized but otherwise bare. NARSskin Multi-Action Toner was applied to their visages to remove any dirt, debris, and makeup, and to prep their complexions. NARSskin Luminous Moisture Cream was then massaged onto their faces to hydrate skin and give it a healthy glow, as well as NARSskin Total Replenishing Eye Cream for the eye area. Beyond these skincare products, the only makeup used was the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer, which was applied on as as-needed basis to disguise any redness, blemishes, or under-eye circles.
Eyes were also left untouched — save for the brows, which were brushed upward and set in place with the NARS Triple X Lip Gloss, so as to frame model’s faces but without relying on brow pencils or mousses.
As for the striking lip look, Carrasquillo was inspired by the 1990s, when heavily-lined lips that were significantly lighter along the center were all the rage — especially within the Latino community (I call it the “pastrami lips” trend). He decided to modernize the concept by creating an ombré lip look that was darker along the mouth’s perimeter and lighter on the inside but which involved a fluid color gradation rather than relying on shockingly harsh lines (as was the case with ’90s lip looks). To create the look, he used the NARS Belle Mare Velvet Lip Liner and the NARS Mambo Eyeliner to line lips, then softened those lines and worked the color inward using a combination of the Bette Audacious Lipstick, Ingrid Audacious Lipstick, and Charlotte Audacious Lipstick. These darker lipstick shades — the Bette Audacious lipstick, which is a rich bordeaux shade; the Ingrid Audacious Lipstick, a merlot hue; and Charlotte, an oxblood burgundy — were applied not only along the outer edges of the lip, but were also used to fill the top lip completely. A brighter cherry red shade, the No. 54 Velvet Lip Glide (new for Fall 2014), was applied to the center of the bottom lip to give it the desired pop and create a strong and sophisticated ombré effect.
