Rodarte-AW15-Fashion-Look

When designing the Rodarte Fall 2015 collection, Kate and Laura Mulleavy kept referencing migrating birds, winged creatures leaving cold Northern cities in favor of warmer more pastoral surroundings. To that end, the collection incorporating plenty of feathers, unusual color combinations (which, as Laura pointed out in post-show interviews, are quite common in nature), intricate embroideries, and sequins that perhaps referenced the iridescent plumage of certain avian creatures.

Considering the intricate construction and elaborate colors used for the clothing, it was essential to keep the makeup subdued but still add a fascinating twist — after all their shows have typically featured some of the quirkier, most fascinating makeup looks: from painted-on tribal tattoos to pierced eyebrows and glittery, galactic lips. This time around, the look envisioned by James Kaliardos for NARS Cosmetics centered on the notion of “delicate, refined beauty” with just a few standout touches — in particular, a horizontal line of Swarovski crystals placed below each lower lashline to give the eyes greater depth and a glossy lip to reflect oncoming light.

To create the look, Kaliardos started by infusing moisture into the models’ skin, massaging in the NARSskin Luminous Moisture Cream and the NARSskin Total Replenishing Eye Cream. Next, to give the skin a hint of weightless coverage and a glowing finish, he applied the NARS All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation and dabbed on the Radiant Creamy Concealer sparingly, using only as needed.

To give cheeks a rosy, natural-looking flush, he applied the NARS Tribulation Blush (new for Fall 2015) and the left side of the Fervor Blush (new for Spring 2015) to give the bone structure a bit more definition.

The eyes were given just a hint of color by brushing the lids with the light apricot-colored NARS Craving Blush (new for Fall 2015), lining the lashline with the eye-opening NARS Rue Bonaparte Larger Than Life Long-Wear Eyeliner, a light almond shade. Next, lashes were curled and coated with the NARS Audacious Mascara (new for Fall 2015). Brows, meanwhile, were brushed up and set in place with the NARS Brow Gel.

To give lips only a hint of color, Kaliardos first neutralized the pout by dabbing on the Radiant Creamy Concealer, thereby creating a blank canvas and downplaying the natural rosiness of the mouth. Next, he applied the NARS Chelsea Girls Lip Gloss (new for Fall 2015), a sheer guava pink hue with plenty of shine.

And for the most amazing finishing touch, clear Swarovski crystals were glued on, below the lower lashline, in a straight horizontal line that seemed to align perfectly with the eyeballs (as opposed to the entire eye contour).
