Recreate the Beauty Looks of Sofia Vergara, Zooey Deschanel, Kate Mara, Cate Blanchett, and Amber Heard at the 2014 Golden Globe Awards

You may not be able to snatch up Cate Blanchett’s Armani Couture dress, Kerry Washington’s Fred Leighton jewels, or even Emma Thompson’s Louboutin heels, but one of the wonderful things about the realm of beauty is that, with the right tools and techniques, you can experiment with any red carpet hair or makeup look.  Below, you”ll get the scoop on the cosmetics, skin care products, and hair styling tools used to create five celebrities’ Golden Globes looks, as well as step-by-step instructions so you can try recreating them at home!

SOFIA VERGARA

Though I wasn’t crazy about Vergara’s Zac Posen ball gown, I did marvel over her turquoise Lorraine Schwartz bib necklace — particularly since it suited her skin tone so well and it made the onlookers’ gaze move upward toward her beautiful face. In terms of her hair and makeup, Vergara opted for a classically simple look that still oozed sex appeal.

Hair stylist Harry Josh opted for loose waves that conjured up images of Veronica Lake. To achieve the desired look, Josh created a diagonal part and blowdried Vergara’s hair using a 2″ barrel brush and his new Harry Josh Pro Tools Pro Dryer 2000 ($300 at Hairenvy.com), which features ion technology to give tresses a shiny, satiny finish.

Vergara’s makeup look, meanwhile, was achieved using an assortment of Covergirl products. First, her makeup artist applied the Covergirl truBLEND Foundation in M6 and dusted a bit of powder atop the foundation to set it properly. To give cheeks a youthful appearance, she swept the Covergirl Clean Glow Blush in Roses to the apples of her cheeks.

The focal point of the makeup look was a sexy cat eye with va-va-va-voom lashes. Rather than use the standard black liner used to create a cat eye, Vergara opted for a brown hue: Covergirl Bombshell Liner in Chocolate Kiss. Lids, meanwhile, were brushed with the Covergirl Bombshell Shine Shadow in Gold Goddess to add a hint of shine to the look. Lashes were then lengthened and accentuated with the Covergirl Bombshell Volume Mascara.

Like many other celebrities on the red carpet Sunday evening, Vergara opted for a bold lip, applying the Covergirl LipPerfection Lip Color in Flame, a fiery, orange-tinged red shade.

ZOOEY DESCHANEL

Zooey Deschanel didn’t quite make my best-dressed list, but she did look pretty in her cream-colored, retro-feeling frock, which was very consistent with Deschanel’s style.  Since her dress was so soft and feminine, makeup artist Jorjee Douglass opted for a very natural and clean look centered mainly around a strong lip.

Before applying any makeup to Deschanel’s face, Douglass massaged Tarte’s Maracuja Oil into her skin, thereby hydrating her skin, smoothing its surface, and giving her complexion a luminosity boost. Next, she applied the Tarte Maracuja Creaseless Concealer in Light under her eyes to camouflage any dark circles. To even her skin tone and give her complexion a flawless appearance, Douglass then applied the Tarte BB Tinted 12-Hour Primer in Light all over her face. Next, she dabbed the Tarte Cheek Stain in Tipsy over the apples of her cheeks to give them a just-pinched look and topped this off with the richly pigmented Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Tipsy, giving the color a bit more pop. To set her makeup and keep shine at bay, Douglass then dusted the Amazonian Clay Finishing Powder all over Deschanel’s face.

Moving on to the eyes, Douglass hoped to create a muted, fluttery eye. To do so, she relied on the Tarte MATTEnificent Colored Clay Eye & Cheek Palette, brushing the View From Taupe eyeshadow to her lower lids, extending the color up to the crease. She then blended the Bronze Horizon eye shadow over this shade. To keep the look soft, she lined Deschanel’s lower lash line with the Don’t Stand Black color included in the palette. Lashes were given definition with two coats of the Tarte Gifted Amazonian Clay Smart Mascara while eyebrows were kept in place with the Tarte Amazonian Clay Waterproof Brow Mousse in Taupe.

Last, to create a punchy red pout, Douglass mixed the Tarte LipSurgenece Matte Lip Tint in Fiery with the LipSurgence Power Pigment in Tipsy, thereby keeping the finish matte but amplifying the intensity of the hue.

AMBER HEARD

Amber Heard opted for a makeup look that was at once restrained and glamorous, soft and sultry, echoing the feel of  her romantic updo, which was undeniably sophisticated but also appeared slightly disheveled for a slightly naughty, bedroom-ready feel. Makeup artist Matthew VanLeeuwen was responsible for creating Heard’s sophisticated makeup look, which involved dewy skin, nude lips, and chocolate-y eyes with just a hint of sparkle.

To create the look, VanLeeuwen started by moisturizing Heard’s skin with the Clé de Peau Gentle Nourishing Emulsion and then he primed her complexion with the Hourglass No. 28 Primer Serum, which incorporates such nourishing botanical oils as lavender oil, jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, green tea extract, evening primrose oil, geranium oil, and olive oil. Next, to create the proper base, he used the Hourglass Hidden Concealer in Warm and smoothed the Hourglass Veil Fluid Makeup in Light Beige all over her complexion.

On Heard’s cheeks, Van Leeuwen applied the sheer rose shade from the Hourglass Illume Creme-to-Powder Bronzer Duo in Sunset and highlighted her cheekbones with the sheer champagne hue from the Hourglass Illume Creme-to-Powder Bronzer Duo in Bronze Light. To give her a lit-from-within glow, he then swept the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Ethereal Light to her complexion, paying particular attention to her cheekbones.

Moving on to the eyes, he defined Heard’s brows with the Hourglass Arch Brow Sculpting Pencil in Soft Brunette, lightly filling in any gaps. To give the eyes an understated hint of color, he applied the shell shade from the Hourglass Vol. 6 Eye Palette all over the lids, using it as a base shade, and then brushed the bronze shimmer shade from the Hourglass Visionnaire Eye Shadow Duo in Gypsy to the crease area and also under the eyes, right below the lower lash line. To give the look more depth, he then deepened this bronze shade with the brown shadow from the Vol. 6 palette, applying it to the outer corners of eyes, along the crease, and under the eyes. Next, he lined the eyes with the MAC Cosmetics Eye Kohl in Prunella, a deep plum hue, and smudged the line with the black shadow from the Vol. 6 palette.  Along the inner corners of eyes, he applied a high-shine pearl shadow that would make her eyes look wider and more alert. Last, he applied the Hourglass Film Noir Mascara and amplified individual lashes with the Ardell Duralash Flare in Medium Black.

Keeping Heard’s pout understated, VanLeeuwen lined lips with the Hourglass Trace Lip Liner in Bare and then filled her pout with the Hourglass Femme Rouge Velvet Creme Lipstick in Whisper, a pinky beige shade with golden undertones and a shimmery finish. 

CATE BLANCHETT

Though most people would’ve immediately gravitated to a red lip color when regarding Blanchett’s black lace gown, makeup artist Jeanine Lobell had the foresight to eschew the expected and, instead, opt for a softer, more romantic rose color.

First, to prepare Blanchett’s complexion, Lobell applied the moisture-boosting SK-II Facial Treatment Mask while the actress was getting her manicure. Once the treatment was complete, she applied the Lancôme Translucent Mattifying Silky Pressed Powder to her face and swept the NARS Highlighting Blush in Satellite of Love to her cheekbones so as to accentuate her stunning bone structure.

To keep eyes looking fresh and not too harsh, Lobell relied on two light hues from the Chanel Les 4 Ombres Quadra Eye Shadow palette in Intuition — a pink-toned beige and a golden beige — blending both shades together and dusting them all along the lids, below the crease. To give eyes just a hint of depth, she then applied a touch of the Illusion D’Ombre Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow in Emerville to the lids. No liners were used to define eyes, but Lobell did pile on layers and layers of Lancôme’s Hypnôse Waterproof Custom Volume Mascara to both the upper and lower lashes.

To create the perky, garden-ready rose color we saw on Blanchett’s lips, Lobell blended two Giorgio Armani Rouge Ecstasy Lipstick shades: #502 Scarlatto, a raspberry rose, and #509 Boudoir, a nude rose.

KATE MARA

Kate Mara’s beauty look involved three main components: glowing skin, nude lips, and intense eyes. Celebrity makeup artist Coleen Campbell-Olwell began by applying the Orlane Super-Moisturizing Light Cream to Mara’s face, then dabbed the Orlane Absolute Skin Recovery Eye Contour around her eyes to nourish and tighten the skin around the eyes, preparing it for the concealer she’d apply next.

To give her skin coverage while boosting radiance, Campbell-Olwell mixed a Chanel foundation with two drops of Orlane’s Morning Recovery Concentrate, applying the mixture with a sponge. Once the foundation had set, she contoured the cheeks ever so lightly using the Orlane Bronzer, relying on a swirling motion with her brush so as to avoid any concentration of color but, rather, keep the look light and ethereal.

For Mara’s eyes, Campbell-Olwell used Antonym’s Certified Natural Eye Pencil in Noir, applying the color to the waterline and along the top of the lash, thereby rimming the eye completely. She then blended out the liner along the upper lash line to create a smoky effect and gently traced the area using a combination of navy and gray eyeshadows, keeping the focus on the lash lines. To complete the eye look, she applied the Orlane Volume Care Mascara.

Lips, meanwhile, were left completely bare, with only a touch of lip balm added to give them shine and keep them soft and supple.
