Recap of “Acceso Total NY” Segment On Billboard Latin Music Awards Fashion Predictions
Last Thursday, as the white carpet was being rolled out for the 2015 Billboard Latin Music Awards (yes, J.Lo insisted on a white carper rather than the customary red one!), I stopped by Telemundo NY’s “Acceso Total” to chat about some of the red carpet trends we’ve seen over the past few months and what we were likely to encounter during that evening’s awards ceremony. New York-based formalwear brand Faviana provided all of the dresses seen in the segment, while CC Skye contributed the jewelry.
First, as you’ll see in the video above, I talked about the growing popularity of evening gowns with sheer insets that create the illusion of nudity. One of the models posed in a bronze evening gown with plenty of sensual cut-outs featuring sheer mesh insets that reminded me of Jennifer Lopez because of the mermaid silhouette, shimmering material (J.Lo can’t resist a bit of bling to complement her famous “glow”), low-cut back (which emphasizes the derriere), and those trompe l’oeil sheer insets which were reminiscent of the Zuhair Murad dresses she’s worn on many an occasion (among them the 2013 Golden Globes). Since the dress featured all-over sequins, we kept the jewelry simple, opting for an asymmetrical pair of earrings (a pyramid-shaped stud on one side and a dangling chain link earring on the other), a few caged rings, and a simple cuff.
Second, I talked about how graphic black-and-white gowns were a big trend at the Oscars this year. Reese Witherspoon looked stunning in a white Tom Ford gown with a black waist and a black off-the-shoulder neckline, and Patricia Arquette even won the Best Supporting Actress statue wearing a black-and-white gown. To illustrate the trend, we showcased a strapless Faviana gown with modern color-blocking that accentuated the female silhouette. I thought this type of dress would’ve looked lovely on someone like Natalia Jimenez, who has previously shown a penchant for very graphic and bold looks. We accessorized the gown with geometric CC Skye hoop earrings and a hand cuff that hugged the center of the hand, resting about an inch below the knuckles.
Last but not least, we chatted about crop top and long skirt combinations for the red carpet — a look seen on Sarah Hyland at last year’s Emmy Awards, when she dazzled in a coral-toned Christian Siriano ball gown skirt and a white crop top, and on Iggy Azalea at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, when she matched a Temperley London skirt with a white crop top. I absolutely love this two-piece evening look from Faviana, which features a straight-cut, floor-length skirt with a bejeweled waistline, along with a midriff-baring crop top with a high neck, a sheer inset panel, a sweetheart neckline, and intricate beadwork. The sapphire blue color of the look also speaks to a red carpet trend as this hue was favored by such actresses as Julianna Margulies, who donned a Giambattista Valli gown in this shade to the 2015 SAG Awards. I thought this look would’ve worked really nicely on Mexican pop star Belinda since she has a svelte figure that she loves to show off, and the youthfulness of the look would’ve suited her persona. We kept the jewelry at a minimum here, accessorizing primarily with dainty studs.
