After the success of her affordable Simply Vera apparel line for Kohl’s, not to mention the continued acclaim garnered by her bridal and ready-to-wear collections and the popularity of her namesake fragrances (among them Vera Wang Princess, Vera Wang Rock Princess, Vera Wang Flower Princess, Vera Wang Glam Princess, and Vera Wang Princess Night), esteemed designer Vera Wang has set out to conquer the junior’s realm with her new affordable apparel and accessories line for Kohl’s, Princess Vera Wang. The new line, which launched this month, constitutes Wang’s first foray into the contemporary junior’s lifestyle realm — and, based on the current offerings, her journey will be long and fruitful.
The Princess Vera Wang collection includes apparel, handbags, jewelry and accessories that spans across a bevy of style penchants, with flowy, Bohemian-flavored designs accompanied by dainty, ultra feminine pieces, rocker chic offerings, and clean, preppy fare. One of my favorite pieces in the collection is the Princess Vera Wang Sheer Studded Paisley Top ($32.99 at Kohls.com), which was gifted to me by the company’s publicity agency. Pictured above at top, this semi-sheer blouse features a lovely saffron yellow color with a retro paisley print in shades of mustard, cobalt, paprika orange, taupe, and white. Unlike other peasant blouses that feature elastic waistbands that create a balloon-like effect, this one features a standard hemmed waistline and yet the rounded cut of that waistline allows the top to flow down gracefully, reinforcing a sense of ease. Similarly, the 3/4-length sleeves feature dainty button closures so that the puffy effect is subtle and demure, and light pleating along the center of the blouse adds the slightest sense of structure. For a contemporary kick, the U-shaped tie neckline is surrounded by copper-colored studs in round and heart shapes. Though it’s meant for a teen or tween girl, it’s the kind of blouse a thirty-something woman (like myself) can wear without hesitation.
Similarly, the Princess Vera Wang Sheer Bird Top ($25.99 at Kohls.com) feels youthful but not infantile. This particular top also features a sheer construction, though in this case it’s a Chinoiserie-esque printed mesh overlay juxtaposed over a white shell. The scoop-neck blouse features short sleeves, a cinched tie neckline, and a staggered hemline, so that the sheer overlay falls a bit lower than the base material. Another piece you may want to borrow from your teen’s closet: the Princess Vera Wang Paisley Ruffled Halter Dress ($39.99 at Kohls.com), which features a cinched waist line, cascading ruffles along the bodice, a V-style halter neck, and free-flowing, undulating ruffles falling vertically along the skirt.
Another piece for moms and daughters alike: the Princess Vera Wang Eyelet Shortie Short ($29.99 at Kohls.com), shown sixth from top, a ’60s-flavored pair of cotton shorts with a wide elastic waistband and floral eyelets decorating the outer shell, creating a lace-like effect. This was another piece gifted to me by the amazing PR team, and I loved the shorts so much that I’ve been rocking them non-stop. Now, I must warn you that these are on the verge of being poom poom shorts, so don’t expect too much coverage along the rear so you’ll probably want to wear them to the beach and not to the office.
Though the aforementioned pieces can transcend the junior’s demo (particularly since the sizes range from 0 to 13), there are also offerings that lean more hevaily towards a younger, Hannah Montana-loving, Justin Bieber-adoring, locker-slamming crowd. Among these is the Princess Vera Wang Quilted Shoulder Bag ($59.99 at Kohls.com), which comes in bright colors like yellow and fuchsia, as well as a basic black. The rectangular shoulder bag measures 6″ in height, 10″ in width, and 2 1/2″ in depth, and it features a quilted diamond design and a rectangular top flap with a magnetic closure. The words “Born to Rule” are printed in bright pink script along the length of the faux leather strip at the center of the shoulder strap, which itself features a 13″ drop. I was actually gifted the shoulder bag in the hot pink hue and thought it was absolutely charming for a junior high school girl.
On the jewelry front, tweeny treasures include the Princess Vera Wang Two-Tone Multistrand Cuff Bracelet ($16.80 at Kohls.com), shown fifth from top, a bulky cuff with a snap closure featuring multiple chain strands coated in blue, teal, yellow, pink, and orange enamel; and the Princess Vera Wang Simulated Crystal & Simulated Pearl Crown Drop Earrings ($12.60 at Kohls.com), pictured last above, a dainty pair of dangle earrings measuring 2 5/8″ in length, each with an etched, tarnished-looking, golden metal crown adorned with sparkling faux crystals and positioned atop a shield-like square bearing a pink enamel heart at its center and featuring strands of pearl-like beads dangling from its bottom ridge.
Pictured below, you’ll find more pieces from the collection — among them the Princess Vera Wang Striped Lace Dress ($53.99 at Kohls.com), which features a black-and-white striped tee attached to a strapless lace dress for a layered, punk princess look; the Princess Vera Wang Quilted Canvas Heart Tote ($69 at Kohls.com), a roomy bag with a canvas body and quilted leather paneling along the base, woven ribbon and chain shoulder straps, and a faded heart graphic with an arrow piercing through its center adorning the front surface; and the Princess Vera Wang Ballet Flats ($37.99 at Kohls.com), which feature tassel accents and leather-like piping.
