Plastic Is Fantastic — Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics’ Plastic Passion Matte Lip Tars

You don’t have to mimic Regina George and her gang of minions, to appreciate the fantastic in plastics. For Spring 2014, Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics is delving into the wondrously colorful world of ’80s playthings like My Little Pony toys, posable Care Bear figures, Power Wheels Corvette ride-on cars, Fisher Price Precious Places castles with its aptly dubbed Plastic Passion collection. The collection incorporates several intensely pigmented Lip Tars in shades so adventurous that even the tough-as-nails members of The Misfits — Roxy, Stormer, Jetta and Pizzazz  — would shy away from wearing them. Fortunately, today’s trendsetting vixens are more daring than ever before, venturing to flaunt fully opaque turquoise and neon orange pouts. Candy colors, punk pastels, and technicolor brights, then, replace succulent aubergine and rouge tones, sensible nudes and demure pinks and peaches. This spring, it’s all about fun, excess, and color.

The Plastic Passion collection features six Lip Tar shades: two metallic hues and four matte colors. The metallic shades are the most understated — there’s Hollywood, a warm beige with gold shimmer; and Pleasure Model, a pearlescent pink with an alluring all-over sheen. But what you’ll be gushing about will be the matte Lip Tar hues, which are brighter than scoops of jelly beans and gum balls, and so sweet, they feel a bit dangerous. The four matte Lip Tar hues in the collection are: Pool Boy, an aquatic, fluorescent turquoise hue; Mannequin, a lavender-toned pink; Rollergirl, a deep, lavender-toned purple; and Kimber, a traffic-stopping neon orange coral.

Each vegan and cruelty-free Lip Tar  retails for $18 at OCCmakeup.com  and is formulated with peppermint oil, hemp oil, and vitamin E to soothe, moisturize, and protect lips while also locking in color.

The four new matte Lip Tar shades are insanely fun and, of course, I couldn’t wait to swatch them so you, too, could join the plastic party. Below, you’ll find swatches of Mannequin and Rollergirl.

The Mannequin shade reminds me of the Pink Friday lipstick shade Nicki Minaj came out with for MAC Cosmetics, but the Lip Tar packs way more punch and is significantly more opaque. And, as with all Lip Tars, it retains a slick finish that’s absolutely irresistible. The color reminds me of the lightning bolt earrings that were so popular in the ’80s.

The Rollergirl hue, meanwhile, is perhaps a nod to the purple satin shorts ensemble Heather Graham’s character wore in Boogie Nights. The color is reminiscent of the lavender fields in Provence but, again,the wet-looking finish adds an almost textural quality that does, in fact, make the shade reminiscent of plastic toys. Every time I see the shade, I think of the ’80s My Little Pony figures!

The Kimber shade is perfectly on trend right now since orange lips are once again dominating the spring and summer makeup forecast. The shade is unapologetically bright and it straddles the line between being beach-y and urban.  The fluorescent quality of the shade makes it a bit reminiscent of traffic cones and Road Work Ahead signs, but the depth and opacity of the orange shade, along with the coral undertones, make it feel worthy of a tropical fish’s scales. There’s a surreal quality to the shade that renders it worthy of an animated universe like that of Finding Nemo.

The Pool Boy shade is, undoubtedly, the gutsiest of all four. If you thought Rihanna was bold when she stepped out wearing cobalt blue lips, wait until you see girls rocking this shade, a technicolor aqua blue hue reminiscent of inflatable pool toys and donut-shaped tubes. The color is so electric it also brings to mind ’80s pop culture phenomena like the blue leotards Jane Fonda donned in her workout videos, glow in the dark bracelets, and Popples stuffed animals.
