Pineapples have long been associated with hospitality. Endemic to southern Brazil and Paraguay, the pineapple made its way to many a Caribbean island thanks to the active trade among indigenous civilizations. In the 15th century, during his second voyage to the Caribbean island of Guadalupe, Christopher Columbus encountered the fruit for the very first time and instantly grew fascinated by its hard, pine cone-like exterior and sweet, juicy interior. Columbus quickly began exporting pineapples to Europe but, due to the lack of refrigeration, they rarely made it through the voyage before spoiling, and their rarity made them all the more coveted by royals looking to flaunt their status. In colonial America, meanwhile, pineapples were often displayed as centerpieces at lavish banquets when visitors were expected, the fruit’s presence serving as the ultimate welcoming sign. In time, pineapple shapes were carved onto bedposts, headboards, and corbels to further augment a home’s inviting ambiance.
