Penelope Cruz’s Sophia Loren-Inspired Beauty Look at the 2014 Oscars

Though I wasn’t particularly smitten with Penelope Cruz‘s blush pink silk mousseline GiambattistaValli Haute Couture gown, her elegant moño, dewy skin, and brown smokey eyes worked together to convey a sense of elegance and of subtle seduction. British makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury was inspired by Sophia Loren when creating Cruz’s makeup look, and so she hoped to exaggerate the española‘s almond-shaped eyes while also keeping the effect demure and soft.

To bestow an angelic glow upon Cruz’s skin, Tilbury started by smoothing Charlotte’s Magic Cream (available Fall 2014) onto her complexion, giving it a dewy finish. Next, she applied the WonderGlow (available Fall 2014) all over Cruz’s face to smooth any fine lines and diminish the appearance of blemishes, red splotches, and dark spots, yielding a soft-focus effect. Next, she applied the Lancôme Teint Miracle foundation in Medium 6 to her face, dabbing on concealer under her eyes, along the sides of her nose, and atop any blemishes.

To accentuate Cruz’s bone structure, Tilbury applied the sculpting shade of the Filmstar Bronze and Glow (available Fall 2014) under the cheekbones, onto the temples, and around the jawline, while the highlighting shade was dabbed onto the high points of her cheekbones, down the ridge of her nose, and along the Cupid’s bow (that V-shaped nook right along the center of the upper lip). A flush of youthful color was added via the Lancôme blusher in Rose Subtil, which was swept onto the apples of the cheeks.

Moving on to her eyes, Tilbury filled in Cruz’s brows to better frame her face. To do so, she used the Lancôme Le Crayon Poudre in Taupe, ultimately creating a brow shape inspired by Sophia Loren. The brow hairs were set in place using the Lancôme Modele Sourcils brow gel. To elongate her eyes and create a feline effect, Tilbury used a black Kohl liner to trace her upper and lower lash lines, extending the line upwards and outwards at the outer corners to create a cheeky flick. To further accentuate the eyes, Tilbury lined the inner waterline with black liner. Next, to soften the look a bit, she brushed a coppery brown eye shadow from the Charlotte Tilbury Dolce Vita palette (available Fall 2014) all over the lids, extending the color from the lash lines to the brows. Lastly, she applied a tiny set of false lashes to the outer edges of eyes and coated both upper and lower lashes with the Lancôme Hypnose mascara.

Lips were hydrated using the Lancôme Baume in Love lip balm and then lined and filled with the Charlotte Tilbury Penelope Pink lipstick (available Fall 2014), a creamy nude shade created for Cruz.
