If there’s one woman who has consistently proven that hats aren’t merely utilitarian accessories designed to keep heads warm during blustery winter days or to shield women in tropical climates from harsh and oppressive-feeling rays of sunshine, it would be Eugenia Kim.
When you’re as brilliant, talented, and well-respected as NARS Founder and Creative Director François Nars, you not only get to climb to the very top of the makeup artistry realm, masterminding some of the most memorable editorial and runway beauty looks in recent decades, but you get to build your very own beauty empire (he famously launched his eponymous cosmetics brand in 1994); steer your company to commercial success without sacrificing its innately and effortlessly cool DNA; then sell it to Shiseido (which he did in 2000) while retaining complete creative control of the brand, its product development, and the imagery associated with every new campaign and initiative.
At the height of the Flower Child era, in the 1960s, Kiehl’s found itself exploring the healing power of blossoms but, rather than concentrating on the daisies and sunflowers that adorned the strands of peace sign-flashing, free love-espousing hippies, the famed apothecary researched the virtues of the marigold.

The autumn season has officially commenced and, already, we can see leaves starting to change colors and float down from tree branches, landing atop streets, lawns, and sidewalks where they’ll be raked into piles — veritable mountains that children will beg to jump in with their Wellington boots.
On Thursday evening, I had the honor of attending the Icons of Style awards hosted by Vanidades, a beloved Spanish-language fashion, beauty, and lifestyle magazine that I grew up reading (my mom had a subscription when I was a child in Puerto Rico) and which, to a great extent, probably lured me into both a career in publishing and, later, a more acute focus on fashion.
Today marks the beginning of the final week of ULTA Beauty’s “21 Days of Beauty” celebration, and the beauty retailer is determined to end the festivities with a bang!
Though many don’t consider primer a requisite step when applying makeup, I personally believe it makes a world of difference — not just because it essentially locks your makeup in place, allowing it to last longer, but also because it turns the skin into a smooth canvas, minimizing pores, hydrating and plumping the skin, and diminishing the appearance of fine lines (all of which, in turn, allow any cosmetics applied to truly dazzle).
If you asked me to name the Top 10 coolest female characters in American cinema, I’d doubtless mention Pulp Fiction’s Mia Wallace, played perfectly by Uma Thurman.
