Nomad-Inspired Makeup And Bouncy Curls At Ports 1961 Spring 2011 Show
In keeping with the desert inspiration of Fiona Cibani’s Ports 1961 Spring 2011 collection, lead MAC Cosmetics makeup artist Val Garland created a look that channeled a “nomadic gypsy jet-setter on holiday.” To create this look, she focused on juxtaposing shimmering bronze and copper shadows with soft, cool grays so that the contrast would create an enticing, subtle, demure smoky eye. Skin, meanwhile, was kept fresh, though quite a healthy amount of blush was used to contour cheekbones. Lips, lastly, received just a hint of fleshy beige-pink color.
Models’ visages were given a natural-looking amount of coverage with the MAC Face And Body Foundation, which was applied with the MAC 188 Small Duo Fibre Face Brush. The creamy, opaque Studio Finish Concealer was used as needed to cover dark under eye circles, blemishes, scars, and any other skin imperfections. Cheeks were contoured with the MAC Derailed Creme Shadow (new for 2011) and cheekbones were highlighted with the MAC Cream Colour Base, a shimmering pink-beige hue. To give the apples of the cheeks a rosy tint, the MAC Creme Blush in So Sweet, So Easy (from this year’s MAC in Lillyland collection) was applied.
Creating the gypsy-esque eye look involved quite a few steps. Garland and her team started out by blending the MAC Eye Pencil in Coffee, a brown color, into the lash line with the 212 Flat Definer Brush. Next, they applied the Dalliance Mega Metal eyeshadow (new for 2011), buffing it onto the inner lid area. Using the MAC 217 Blending Brush, they then worked the Wood Winked eyeshadow onto the outer lid region. To line the eyes, they opted for the Eye Kohl in Teddy, a pearly bronze hue, gliding it along the upper lash line, and blending it with the 212 Flat Definer Brush, then layering the Paparazz-She Mega Metal Eyeshadow (new for 2011) over the Teddy liner using the MAC 222 Tapered Blending Brush. To highlight the brow bone, they applied a bit of the Dalliance Mega Metal Eyeshadow (new for 2011) along this area, using the MAC 224 Tapered Blending Brush to do so. Next, the inner area of the lower lash line was lined with the MAC Powersurge Eye Kohl, a bronzed brown with golden shimmer, and the outer area was lined with the Teddy Eye Kohl. A touch of Center Stage Mega Metal Eyeshadow (new for 2011) was blended over the liner. The eyes were then finished off with two coats of Studio Fix Lash mascara in Black Fix along both the upper and lower lashes.
Lips were lined and filled in with the MAC Lip Pencil in Oak, a soft khaki brown hue, which was then mixed with the Flesh Lipglass (also new for 2011).

Celebrity hairstylist Orlando Pita commandeered the hair team backstage, creating an airy but slightly drier look, with bouncy curls arranged in an almost feathered manner, recalling the look of such icons as Charlie’s Angels. To create the look, he used only two products from his own namesake haircare line: Elevate, which he applied onto hair before utilizing any curling irons so as to set the hair and give it a bit of texture, and Control, a hairspray applied to ensure hold.
