Mdurvwa Leather Gloves — As Seen at the Korto Momolu FW14 Fashion Show

A few weeks ago, when I went backstage at the Korto Momolu FW14 show during New York Fashion Week to report the beauty and hair looks created by the SheaMoisture team, I not only fell in love with the brand’s new range of cosmetics (launching this spring at Target), but I also swooned over the accessories that were neatly arranged on a table, each paired with one of the garments that would be showcased during the runway presentation. Particularly striking were the leather gloves by Mdurvwa, which snapped around the ankle snugly and featured crisscrossing straps atop the back of the hand that together created a caged design, stretching in diagonal lines from the ankle to the knuckle, looping around  the base of each finger.

Nigerian designer Deborah Mdurvwa launched her eponymous accessories line after a fateful trip to New York City, hoping to create eye-catching, bold, adventurous pieces that conveyed an urban sensibility but also tapped into her ethnic background via the occasional incorporation of Afrocentric prints. In one collection, for instance, you might find a pair of bamboo earrings wrapped in kente cloth, a single ear cuff with draped chains that lead to a safety pin-adorned stud earring, an adjustable cuff with a lion’s head motif, and stackable cuffs with spikes on each end.

The new Mdurvwa leather gloves, however, are the designer’s most innovative creation to date. These strappy statement pieces command as much attention as Michael Jackson’s crystal-encrusted glove. And, like that iconic glove, they’re meant to be worn on one hand only — as opposed to in pair form (though, if you’re fierce enough to rock two of these bad boys, go for it!). These handmade accessories are available in several colorways. The newest addition to the collection is the Mdurvwa Leather Glove in Red ($60 at Mdurvwa.com), shown at top, which is crafted out of a slightly crackled leather in an apple red hue. Other options include the Gold and Silver options shown above (each $70 at Mdurvwa.com) and the Black with Gold Studs piece ($70 at Mdurvwa.com), which adds an added sense of danger via the incorporation of gold-toned pyramid stud accents.
