Look of the Day — Tribal Print Maxi, Beaded Hoop Earrings, Caged Wedges and More!

After a few days laying low and nursing cups of hot ginger tea to soothe a sore throat (not to mention the sniffles, lingering headaches, and the beginnings of a throat-tickling, sleep-minimizing, completely irksome cough), I finally woke up today feeling ready to put on my game face and hit the New York City streets. Over the years, I’ve learned that, even when I feel lousy, taking the time to put together a nice outfit and do my makeup will elevate my mood, so I aimed to accomplish precisely this goal when picking today’s outfit. And, since summer is coming to a close, I wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to wear one of my lightweight maxi dresses. My maxi of choice: a sleeveless American Twist number with a geometric tribal print in shades of light blue, turquoise, teal, cobalt, aqua, indigo blue, Pepto pink, and cream that recall the colors of the houses and buildings in San Antonio, Texas, lending the piece a playful Southwestern vibe.

In keeping with the tribal motif, I accessorized the look with a pair of beaded hoop earrings from NOir Jewelry and a statement necklace from Kendra Scott featuring a hefty feather-like pendant with a turquoise stone at its centers. I then added my Amrita Singh Rupan Bangle Bangle Set (which includes 15 gold-tone brass bangles, some covered in silk fuchsia thread, some featuring Austrian crystals, some embellished with pink resin beads, and some lightly textured via ball bead studs and etchings) and slid on a feather-shaped, two-finger ring from Rachel Rachel Roy.

Now, most folks would probably choose thong sandals when wearing a maxi dress but, since I wanted to dress the look up ever so slightly (without compromising the sense of ease), I opted for a pair of wedges in a light tan color. The Kelsi Dagger Kaden wedges feature a cage-like design, with cut-outs all along the leather uppers; a flirtatious peep toe; a rope-covered wedge heel to give the shoes a summery, espadrille-like feel; and a zipper along the back extending all the way to the ankle collar.

Similarly, I stuck to a neutral shade when selecting a handbag so as to not detract from the colors of the dress and jewelry. Since hobo bags have a naturally slouchy shape that tends to register as Bohemian, I opted for my Treesje Bliss Hobo, which is a rich coffee-colored leather bag with an open top, a single wide shoulder strap, ruching along the sides of the crescent moon-shaped bag, and a belted buckle accent at the center.

As for my makeup and hair, when it’s this hot, I tend to wear my hair up and I definitely went that route today (plus it seemed the wiser choice given the business of the dress’s tribal print and my desire to show off the beadwork on my hoop earrings). Similarly, I kept the makeup simple but fun. I started by applying the Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Full Coverage Foundation SPF 15 (one of my go-to foundations) and applied the NARS The Multiple in Lamu, a burnt apricot shade with golden shimmer, all over my cheeks and along the ridge of my nose for a bronzed glow. To add a rosy, slightly flushed effect, I swept on the Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Amused, a perky pink, along the apples of the cheeks. On the eyes, I layered two liners, starting with the Buxom Waterproof Smoky Eye Stick in Nunchucks, a dark blue shade with a matte finish, and then adding the NYX Cosmetics Slide On Eye Pencil in Azure for a bit of pop, blending the two together and finishing the look with two coats of Maybelline’s Illegal Length mascara on lashes. Last, I applied the OCC Makeup Lip Tar in Digitalis, a pink-and-lavender hybrid, to my lips.
