Just Add Water — New Jergens Wet Skin Moisturizer Is A Time-Saving Wonder

How many times have you heard the sonsonete (translation: the tireless repetition) of the post-shower hydration rule that, in order to achieve maximum moisture absorption, it’s critical to apply lotion or body oil to damp skin rather than waiting for it to be fully dry? The challenge, of course, is that when we apply body oils to damp skin, we end up having to walk around au natural for 10 or maybe 15 minutes until all the product is fully absorbed and we’re in the clear to get dressed. In order to streamline the shower-and-hydrate process, then, Jergens just released a range of moisturizes meant to be applied in the shower, after the water has been turned off, when our skin is still dripping wet and we have yet to step out and reach for a towel to pat our bodies dry. The Jergens Wet Skin Moisturizer ($6.99 at drugstores and mass retailers), then, is designed to lock in hydration at the skin’s most absorbent moment via an oil-infused formula that’s readily absorbed by the skin. It’s the type of product that will make you wonder, Why didn’t anyone think of this before?

What’s fascinating about the Jergens Wet Skin Moisturizer is that, when you squeeze out a dime- or nickel-sized amount out of the bottle, it will look like a regular dab of white cream lotion but, once you apply it to the skin, the texture transforms and the lotion appears to melt, with the cream developing a fluid consistency and becoming completely transparent, almost as if the molecules in the formula were blending with the water droplets atop the skin. In a matter of seconds, there’s no traces of any lotion atop the skin, just an oil-like veil that’s lightweight, fluid, and completely non-sticky. Once you’ve covered every area of your body, you simply have to step out of the shower and pat your skin dry with a towel.

Three varieties are available: Jergens Wet Skin Moisturizer with Refreshing Coconut Oil, Jergens Wet Skin Moisturizer with Nourishing Monoi Oil, and  Jergens Wet Skin Moisturizer with Calming Green Tea Oil. Each product contains glycerin and mineral oil, along with the oil underlined in its moniker (the green tea variety also boasts antioxidant-rich sunflower oil). The Jergens Wet Skin Moisturizer With Calming Green Tea Oil has a very soft and soothing scent that will make you feel relaxed, but it’s not an overbearing aroma that will linger on the skin for hours or battle your perfume for attention. Similarly, the Jergens Wet Skin Moisturizer With Refreshing Coconut Oil has the kind of tropical and creamy aroma that will make you dream of island getaways.

That said, these moisturizers do contain artificial fragrances and controversial preservatives like ethylparaben, metthylparaben, and phenoxyethanol, which could potentially irritate the skin. In my case, I found that, after I applied the Jergens Wet Skin Moisturizer, my skin did feel more supple, soft, and smooth, but it’s important to note that those with extremely sensitive skin may want to use the product with caution and discontinue use should any rashes or allergic reactions arise.

So what are the cons? Well, my skin is extremely dry and parched so, sometimes, I find that I need to layer a more decadent, shea butter- or mango butter-enriched moisturizer atop this one. That said, I tend to shower twice a day (once after the gym and once before bed), and the Jergens Wet Skin Moisturizer is a lifesaver for those post-workout showers, when I’m rushing to get ready and back to work. The only other complaint I have pertains to the fact that, while only a small amount of  product will wind up on the towel when you pat your skin dry, you will need to launder your towels more often.

All in all though, the Jergens Wet Skin Moisturizer manages to vastly shorten the time I need to get ready while keeping my skin nourished, luminous, and comfortable. This product, then, deserves to soak up the glory it receives by virtue of its innovative nature.
