From rice water rinses in Indonesia to egg white face masks in Korea, I discussed some of the ancient beauty rituals practiced in different countries and went on to explain how beauty brands are creating powerful products that marry these ancient natural healing remedies with cutting-edge science and medical grade ingredients.
Check out the segment video above and read on to find out more about all the countries we “visited” during our global beauty tour and get more details on the products showcased on air!
FIRST STOPS ON OUR BEAUTY JOURNEY: GHANA & MALI
The baobab tree, which grows in such African countries as Ghana and Mali, is widely known as the “Tree of Life.” This unique tree can store up to 32,000 gallons of water in its trunk, creating a hydration reservoir that allows it to survive during even the harshest droughts. In fact, some baobab trees have lived for over 1,000 years. The baobab tree’s fruit, meanwhile, is incredibly nutritious, containing six times as much vitamin C as oranges and twice as much calcium as milk. The baobab fruit is also said to contain more antioxidants than any other fruit — including açai and goji berries.
The ColorProof Baobab Heal & Repair Collection taps into the curative powers of baobab oil, so that all the products in the line feature a Baobab Power Complex, as well as proteins and essential oils, that strengthen and repair damaged and color-treated hair. After using these products, strands are revitalized and both tensile strength and elasticity are vastly improved.
ColorProof Baobab Heal & Repair Shampoo and Condition, $50 each; and ColorProof Baobab Heal & Repair Leave-in Treatment, $39. Available at ColorProof.com
Baobab oil isn’t just great for the hair — it also works wonders on the skin, helping to improve elasticity and give the complexion that coveted bounce-back. Both the nyakio Baobab Youth Infused Daily Defense Creme and the nyakio Baobab Lip Balm contain sustainably and ethically sourced baoba oil from Mali, which helps to smooth any fine lines and wrinkles, restore volume to the complexion, and leave skin looking supple and firm.
nyakio Baobab Daily Youth Defense Crème, $45, and nyakio Baobab Lip Balm, $22. Available at ULTA stores and Ulta.com
NEXT STOPS: ZAMBIA & MOZAMBIQUE
Inspired by her family of medicine men, farmers, and educators, Kenyan-American beauty entrepreneur Nyakio Grieco created nyakio, a skincare brand that’s built on age-old beauty secrets and cultural traditions from all over the globe. The brand’s products, then, are formulated using ethically and sustainably sourced ingredients from 13 different countries. The Nyakio Manketti & Mafura Anti-Aging Oil, for instance, incorporates Manketti oil from Zambia, which is rich in vitamins C and E, and Mafura oil from Mozambique, which is rich in essential fatty acids. Both oils are cold-pressed so that they retain their nutrients during the extraction process. Together, they hydrate the skin and make it appear more supple and firm.
nyakio Manketti & Mafura Anti-Aging Oil, $49. Available at ULTA stores and Ulta.com
OUR NEXT DESTINATION? IT’S INDONESIA!
Juara is a skincare line inspired by Indonesian herbal traditions, and it features two top-notch products that contain rice, one of the most revered beauty ingredients in Indonesia — and in Asia as a whole.
In Indonesia, women often wash rice grains and then cleanse their complexions with the water left over so as to remove any dirt and condition their skin. This beauty ritual is known for being effective yet gentle and helping to both cleanse and condition the skin. The Juara Rice Facial Cleanser is inspired by these traditional Indonesian rice water rinses. The sulfate-free, 100% vegetarian, gentle foaming cleanser contains rice bran, the outer layer of the rice kernel, which is very rich in vitamin B, and it refreshes skin and reduces redness — all without stripping it of essential oils and nutrients.
The Sweet Black Tea and Rice Moisturizer, meanwhile, contains rice bran oil, which is rich in essential fatty acids and vitamin E group antioxidants like tocopherol, oryzanol and tocotrienol. Candlenut oil, black tea, illipe butter, and hyaluronic acid complement the rice bran oil in the formula. Together, these ingredients work to hydrate and nourish the skin, boost radiance, and maintain elasticity.
JUARA Skincare Rice Facial Cleanser, $29, and JUARA Skincare Sweet Black Tea & Rice Moisturizer, $55. Available at JuaraSkincare.com
NOW WE’RE OFF TO…. KOREA!
Women in Korea have long used egg whites in homemade face masks. Why? Because albumen (or egg white) is one of nature’s highest quality protein sources, and it’s packed with B vitamins like niacin and riboflavin. In keeping with this tradition, Korean beauty brand Skinfood offers several products that contain albumen and are designed to regulate excess sebum production, eliminate pore-clogging impurities, tighten pores and minimize their appearance, and eradicate skin bacteria.
The products in the collection include the Egg White Pore Foam, a gentle daily cleanser that removes dirt, oil, and impurities; the Egg White Pore Mask, which penetrates the pores deeply for a major detox; and the Egg White Pore Hot Steam Mask, which contains albumen along with volcanic ash and Amazonian clay to remove stubborn black heads and control oil production.
Prepare to enjoy a blemish-free and beautifully matte complexion!
SKINFOOD Egg White Pore Foam, $11; SKINFOOD Egg White Pore Mask, $10.50; and SKINFOOD Egg White Pore Steam Mask, $13. Available at ULTA stores, Ulta.com, and TheSkinfood.us

OUR NEXT DESTINATION: GEORGIA!
Next on our global beauty voyage, we headed to the Eurasian country of Georgia. Chuda is a line created by Dr. Elena Ocher, a Georgia-born neurosurgeon and holistic medical professional. All Chuda products combine medical grade active ingredients with a centuries-old Remedea Compound that has antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and healing properties.
Developed by a Georgian family a century ago, the Remedea Compound is a natural remedy comprised of ingredients that grow atop the Caucasus Mountains in untouched and mineral-rich soil. The formula remains a closely guarded secret — but the family granted Dr. Ocher exclusive permission to use the compound to in her Chuda skincare line, thereby exposing a wider audience to the healing powers of the natural complex.
The Chuda Healing Hydrating Cream, then, combines this ancient natural remedy with medical grade active ingredients, resulting in a moisturizer that is 5 times more effective at healing skin than typical moisturizers, leaving even the dries and most compromised skin looking and feeling soft, smooth, supple and radiant.
Chuda Healing Hydrating Cream, $80 for 30 ml and $150 for 50ml. Available at ChudaSkincare.com
AND OUR LAST STOP: THE REPUBLIC OF UZBEKISTAN
Next, we have the Better Skin Company’s Mirakle Cream, which features a secret recipe that the company’s founder, Natalya Rachkova, brought to the U.S. from her homeland, the Republic of Uzbekistan. The antioxidant-rich recipe contains ingredients like sea buckthorn, shea butter, cocoa butter, aloe, algae extract, and coconut oil. Sea buckthorn, in particular ,is the richest known source of palmitoleic acid, a rare omega-7 fatty acid, and it grows in abundance throughout Uzbekistan.
Other ingredients include hyaluronic acid and peptides which help to better moisturize the skin and restore its youthful appearance. Thanks to its unique formula, the Mirakle Cream calms the skin, protects the moisture barrier, and fights visible aging signs.
As a celebration of the brand’s cultural roots, the Better Skin Company commissioned a local artist to customize the cream’s label so as to mirror the patterned fabrics found in Uzbekistan.
