Fresh Sugar Honey Tinted Lip Treatment SPF 15 — Will It Be Your Honeybun?
As soon as you see the Sephora.com ($22.50 at Sephora.com), which moisturizes and protects lips while coating them with a veil of nude color, you’ll wonder why it took this long for Fresh to deliver this beauty wonder. The third tinted version of the classic Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment (released on the heels of Sugar Rosé, a mauve-ish pink shade, and last year’s Sugar Plum, a deeper plum purple color) speaks to one of the hottest makeup trends for the Spring/Summer 2011 season: a nude pout.
Fresh co-founder and Creative Director Alina Roytberg recalled the creamy color of organic honey harvested in Australia when she created the shade, a warm nude reminiscent of crushed brown sugar with a hint of ambery gold. Like its predecessors, the Fresh Sugar Honey Tinted Lip Treatment SPF 15 relies on sugar, a natural humectant, to hydrate lips and to seal in moisture. Gathered from the leaves of Carnauba palm trees in Brazil, carnauba wax is also incorporated into the formula to help lips retain moisture and remain smooth and supple-looking, while beeswax, one of the most common lip balm ingredients, naturally softens the pout. To protect lips from free radical damage, shield them from the sun’s harmful UV rays, and prevent visible aging signs from popping up, the formula also features antioxidant-rich grapeseed polyphenols and vitamins C and E. By promoting cell regeneration, the vitamin A in the lip balm also helps to keep the skin on your kisser looking taut and smooth. The three moisturizing, softening, fatty acid-rich oils found in the previously released lip treatments — meadowfoam seed oil, blackcurrant seed oil, and avocado oil — are also present here, but this iteration of the product also includes passionflower seed oil, a natural remedy for dehydrated skin.
When you glide the Fresh Sugar Honey Tinted Lip Treatment on your lips, you’ll notice a sheer, warm, caramel-ish nude tint deposited on your pout for a very understated look that works beautifully with sun-kissed skin and loose, wavy, beach-y hair. The shade has a subtle, demure, all-over sheen that makes your lips look all the more kissable and sultry. And while the sheer color is understated, you can build the intensity to your liking.
The one complaint — and this goes for all of the tinted lip balms in the Fresh family — is that none of them are quite as emollient as the original, colorless version, with its potent lemony smell and its ultra creamy consistency, which seems to melt onto your mouth upon contact. Still, as tinted lip balms go, this one is certainly top-notch and worthy of a honey pie smooch.

Here’s a photo of me wearing the Fresh Sugar Honey Lip Treatment. As you can see, the color is way less intense when you actually apply it over your naturally pink pout. Rather than a chestnut-y, light cinnamon hue, it’s more of a maple-y, creamy but sheer, nude glaze.
