It’s the first day of spring — which means the end to this dreadful winter weather is upon us (and, hopefully, this will be the last we hear of the phrase “polar vortex”). But let’s not get ahead of ourselves — while March 20th marks the beginning of the spring season, there’s no guarantee that Mother Nature received the memo, so we can’t expect limitless sunshine and temperatures in the ’60s and ’70s just yet. And, while we’re grappling with the temperature roller coaster ride that awaits us in these coming weeks — and the accompanying changes in humidity — we can help decongest our stuffy noses, soothe scratchy throats, enjoy more restful sleep, and keep our skin from feeling dry and itchy with the help of a humidifier.

The Honeywell Top Fill Warm Mist Humidifier ($39.99 at HoneywellComfort.com) has been a true lifesaver in recent months. First, it helped do the seemingly impossible: put an end to my hubby’s snoring! Now, I love sleeping next to my husband but, in recent months, he’d begun conducting a virtual symphony the moment his head hit the pillow, leaving me scrambling for ways to muffle the noise. He’d never been much of a snorer, so I wondered what was causing this latest development — and whether it was a permanent fixture in our lives. Most nights, I tried rolling him over so he’d be laying on his side, hoping it would lessen the intensity of the snoring, only to discover that, as skinny as he is, he’s harder to move than a giant sequoia and, even more perplexing, the snoring will not desist even after a positional change. For weeks, I lay asleep at night, watching reruns of exceptionally lame TV shows, hoping they’d essentially bore me to a deep enough sleep whereby I could completely tune the snoring out. I even tried earplugs but dismissed this solution when I realized I wasn’t hearing my alarm clock in the morning. I assumed, then, that I’d pretty much be kissing my “beauty sleep” goodbye.

As it turns out, however, all we needed to end this sad, sleepless saga was a humidifier. I was sent the Honeywell Easy to Care Top Fill Warm Mist Humidifier to review and, to my surprise, it managed to help clear up my hubby’s sinuses, thereby putting an end to the nasal congestion that was manifesting itself via insufferable snoring. We’ve actually both noticed a huge improvement in the quality of the sleep we get.

And that’s not all. Using a humidifier on a nightly basis has also helped to end the nosebleeds that I’ve been grappling with all winter long, the consequence of turned-up heaters and radiators, dry and cold air, and constantly shifting environments. It’s also helped to keep my skin looking and feeling smooth and radiant.

If you wake up in the morning and your face feels dry or looks a bit dull and tired, you might benefit from sleeping with a humidifier in your room. After all, the vapor being dispensed in the air will compensate for any dryness in the room.

There’s a number of humidifiers on the market, but one thing I love about the Honeywell Top Fill Warm Mist Humidifier is that it’s essentially idiot proof. All you need to do is pour up to 1.3 gallons of water into the water tank as instructed in the user’s manual, then place the device on a flat and level surface at least 12″ away from any walls and plug the cable into the wall. Once in place, you simply switch it on, setting the output to High or Low depending on how much vapor you want to be released, and set the Humidistat dial to the desired level. When the humidifier is out of water, as red indicator light will go on. You should then turn the unit off, fill the water tank with cool water, wait about 15 minutes, and turn the humidifier back on. If you fill the humidifier’s tank completely and set it on High, it should run for a full 10 hours — enough to get a good night’s sleep and then some!

You do, of course, have to clean the unit once a week, but it’s a relatively painless process since the top cover, mist chimney, and water float are all dishwasher safe. Sure, you’ll need to clean out the main tank (preferably using vinegar to remove any mineral deposits, then rinsing and following with a bleach-based disinfecting soak), but it’s not an arduous task by any means.
