Enjoy a Bright Future with the Maybelline ColorSensational Vivids Lipstick Collection
One of the most prevalent beauty trends for Spring/Summer 2013 involves bright, bold, statement-making lips — matte fuchsia pouts at the Giles Spring 2013 runway show, cherry red lips at Jason Wu, blood red lips at Burberry Prorsum, vermilion ones at Prada, punky orange lips ta Betsey Johnson, neon coral lips at Richard Nicoll, fluorescent orange ones at Paul Smith, and a matte magenta look at Dries Van Noten. Since Maybelline plays such a pivotal role in creating many of the looks seen on the runway during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York City, it’s only logical that the brand would release a collection of ColorSensational lipstick shades that makes these high-intensity, attention-grabbing, unapologetic hues accessible to all consumers — and at a more reasonable price point. Cue the Maybelline ColorSensational Vivids, a collection of 10 shades packing more “Pow!” and “Zap!” than a 1960s Batman comic book.
I stumbled upon the new assortment of Vivids shades while perusing through a Duane Reade drugstore and quickly snatched up a handful of shades: 860 Pink Pop, a medium bubblegum pink with cool lavender undertones that give it a 1980s feel; 870 Shocking Coral, a tropical coral red with warm, orange undertones and a glaze-like finish; 900 Hot Plum, an intense magenta shade that’s only a smidgen darker than your standard fuchsia shade; and 885 Vibrant Mandarin, a vermilion hue with a satin finish that might remind you of flame azalea flowers.
In addition to offering a super-saturated bolt of color, the Maybelline Vivids lipsticks moisturize, soften, and nourish lips thanks to a formula that includes honey nectar, a powerful humectant, antibacterial, and emollient. Thanks to this hydrating formula, the color glides onto lips easily and, most importantly, the formula doesn’t dry out your pout. That being said, these lipstick are not particularly long-lasting so that you will, in fact, need to reapply whenever you sip on your water or coffee, take a bite, and so forth. But, when they are on your pout, you won’t have to worry about the colors fading or losing their luster since they do manage to maintain their vibrancy. Had these had more staying power, they would have been a true home run for me but they fall just the slightest bit short (as in they’re lingering between third base and that coveted home plate). Along with Covergirl’s Lip Perfection lipsticks, the Maybelline ColorSensational Vivids might just be the best lipsticks you’ll find at the drugstore — in fact, I’d argue that they have a slight edge above the former given the exciting and bold hue options available.
