Discussing Street Style Trends on Telemundo’s “Mujer de Hoy” Segment — Check out the Video, Photos, and Details On the Looks Showcased!
Yesterday, I appeared again on Telemundo’s “Mujer de Hoy” segment — this time to discuss street style trends in New York City and, more importantly, how to turn heads while strutting down the Big Apple’s longest runways: its crowded sidewalks. We filmed the segment at Modalistas, the gorgeous boutique inside the Limelight Marketplace, and Telemundo reporter Nadia Torres even donned a pair of teal jeans with a peach and honeysuckle pink floral print and a sleeveless honeysuckle pink top with ringed trim currently available at the boutique (check her out at the 1:09 mark in the video above). I, meanwhile, styled models Amanda and Ashley in three different looks each (for a total of six looks), mixing and matching pieces from brands like Gentle Fawn, Gretchen Jones, Darling, Everly, H&M, Topshop, RD Style, Via Spiga, Laruicci, Nissa Jewelry, Skinny by Jessica Elliott, Olive & Oak, Jelly Pop, JustFab, Chinese Laundry, Pretty Little Thing NYC, Patrick Shannon, Simply Vera Wang, Viento, Chelsea Flower, AMI Clubwear, and Rachel Rachel Roy.
In terms of the trends discussed, I mentioned how high-low hemlines have become prevalent on everything from blouses to skirts; how we’re seeing tons of patterned pants (many of them mixed patterns at that); how a renwed fascination with the 1960s is being manifested via Mod-inspired, black-and-white prints and Pop Art-informed prints, how florals are being revisited in new and interesting ways that make them feel more exotic and bolder (as opposed to being dainty and precious); and how there’s a Bohemian, gypsy-esque quality to many of the fashions we’re seeing this season. I also spoke about the prevalence of colors like honeysuckle pink, emerald green, mint green, and red this season; how spikes, studs, and chains continue reigning supreme in New York City streets, infusing an edgy vibe into accessories and footwear; and how many of the jackets we’re seeing this season have a more laid-back silhouette, with fluid lines rather than strongly structured shapes. And, of course, I mentioned how the right accessories can transform an outfit — whether it’s a pair of dangling lucite earrings with gunmetal-toned hardware, a pair of platform sandals with sporty perforations, or a velvet clutch with spiked accents.
Below, I’ll walk you through the looks showcased in the segment and give you the scoop on who makes each garment and/or accessory modeled and where you can purchase them!
FIRST LOOKS
When you watch the “Mujer de Hoy” clip (embedded above), you’ll see both of our models strutting along the sidewalk before stepping into Modalistas. This opening shot set the tone for the segment, and so I wanted the looks showcased to capture the optimism and joy of springtime while tapping into some of the most prevalent trends we’ll be seeing throughout the season. For model Ashley (seen below, at right), I chose a very free-spirited and colorful look: a coral colored dress with a demure flounce accent, a multi-colored kimono jacket, strappy sandals with a faux snakeskin heel, two necklaces with oversize stone pendants, a gold-tone cuff with floral accents, and pyramid-shaped stud earrings with two-toned chains connecting to ear cuffs that attach to the top rim of the ear. For model Amanda (seen below, at left), meanwhile, I chose a below-the-knee H&M dress with a modest scoop neckline and a clingy, body-hugging fit, then jazzed it up with a cropped, cream-colored jacket featuring an Asian-inspired floral print with pops of mustard yellow, periwinkle blue, aubergine, brown, and peach.To add a dressy feel, I added some sky-high heels featuring copper, silver, and gold tones, a cream-toned, oval-shaped minaudiere, a statement necklace with a wing-like shape, and simple hoop earrings with a singular stone at their center. SECOND LOOKS
Next, I wanted the models to look like they were ready for a cocktail party or even a romantic date, so I created looks that were modern and sexy but also chic and sophisticated. For Ashley, I chose a figure-hugging, long-sleeved Muse dress featuring one of the hottest shades of the season, blood red, along the top half of the garment and a zesty orange tone along the lower portion of the above-the-knee dress. Prints are such a great way to add a whimsical flair to an ensemble, and I loved the placement of the black-and-white feather print on this Muse dress, how it was slightly angled around the waist to accentuate the area and create a slimming effect, then appearing again along key areas like the shoulders and hips, while also revealing enough negative space so as not to feel overwhelming. Since the print of the dress was so bold, I kept the accessories to a minimum: only a pair of Pretty Little Thing chandelier earrings with an iridescent center stone and strands of chain link fringe arranged in an arrow-like formation along the bottom; a two-finger ring from Rachel Rachel Roy sculpted to resemble a feather; and some black platform sandals from JustFab featuring perforated uppers for a sportier feel.
For Amanda, meanwhile, I decided on a very on-trend, Mod-inspired, black-and-white look. The foundation of the look was a color-blocked shift dress from Everly featuring a triangular-shaped keyhole accent along the chest line. To give the playful frock a sleek and grown-up feel, I added a crisp white, lapel-free Caressa jacket featuring strong shoulders and undulating seams along the sides. I then accessorized the ensemble with a statement-making black clutch from Patrick Shannon Handbags featuring a gold metal eagle motif along the center, a pair of black-and-white Simply Vera Vera Wang wedge sandals with elasticized uppers, and a simple pair of gold vermeil hoop earrings from Skinny By Jessica Elliot, each with a round, white-toned stone along the center of the curved mold at the front.

THIRD LOOKS
For their third looks, I wanted to give the girls some urban edge with bold prints, oversize earrings, spike accents, and every cool girl trapping you can imagine. For Ashley (shown below, at left), I chose a sleeveless ,semi-sheer, ink blue Olive and Oak blouse with cream-colored accents along the arm holes and collar, as well as a high-low hemline, and paired it with some über funky pants from RD Style featuring an elastic waistband and vertical stripes in multiple patterns and colors — some painterly stripes in bold shades of wine, peony pink, orange, white, and black, and others incorporating animal prints like blue leopard spots and a lime-and-yellow snakeskin motif. I then accessorized the look with a pair of Crux New York earrings featuring silver Tibetan beads arranged into an oval shape and accentuated with blue glass beads. Next, I amped up the toughness of the outfit with some JustFab peep-toe platform booties featuring stud accents along the vamp. I completed the ensemble with a blue velvet Patrick Shannon box clutch boasting gunmetal-toned spikes along the sides and a textured ring from Viento NYC modeled after driftwood and featuring a vertical center strip encrusted with clear crystals.
For Amanda, meanwhile, I chose a playful look rooted in the Pop Art aesthetic embraced by the likes of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. The foundation of the look was a long-sleeved bodycon dress from Topshop with a comic book-inspired print featuring colorful clouds with words like “Boom!” and “Pow!” To give the dress even more boom-boom-pow, I paired it with the oh-so-amazing Laruicci Ibiza earrings, which feature three cylindrical purple lucite beads arranged into a triangular formation, with gunmetal-toned, domed ear posts, a gunmetal strip with a diamond-shaped tip dangling inside the open triangle, and then a string of shorter lucite beads hanging like ladder rungs from the base of the open triangle, all connected by gunmetal-toned links. In keeping with the geometric theme, I added a silver chain necklace with pyramid-shaped stations from Pretty Little Thing and brought in some neon playfulness via two stacked braided leather bracelets from Pretty Little Thing, each accentuated with gunmetal-toned, triangular-shaped, fin-like beads.
