Definitely Maybe — Benefit Relaunches Its Iconic Maybe Baby Fragrance

You might associate Benefit Cosmetics with dark circle-blasting concealers, brow lifting pencils, and flush-in-a-bottle cheek tints, but the San Francisco-based beauty brand’s offerings expand way past color cosmetics — in fact, Benefit has its very own fragrance, the flirty Maybe Baby Eau de Toilette ($32 at BenefitCosmetics.com). Initially launched in 2003, Maybe Baby was the aromatic equivalent of  wink and a smile, of a hair flip and an eyelash flutter, of a furtive over-the-shoulder glance. In other words, it was feminine, coquettish, and playfully coy.

Then, circa 2011, the fragrance seemed to vanish from stores and news spread that Maybe Baby had been discontinued. Some fans woefully mourned its loss, others turned to Internet threads to seek answers, and yet others scoured the web looking to purchase a final precious bottle from any soul who had amassed a Maybe Baby stash. Moved by the interest voiced by its customers, Benefit brought back Maybe Baby in December, making sure not to tinker with the aromatic formula but to, instead, offer fans of the scent exactly what they wanted: the opportunity to become reacquainted with their dear old friend.

Though it’s now packaged in a cylindrical tube with a vintage-looking bronzed cap, as opposed to the bulbous bottle in which it was originally harbored, the Benefit Maybe Baby EDT is otherwise unchanged — and as delightful as ever. It’s the perfect summer scent since it’s got a whimsical friskiness to it, with top notes of apricot and white ginger, a heart of cyclamen, lychee and bergamot, and a dry down of white musk, Himalayan poppy, and warm peach.

The apricot top note instantly lures you in with its nectar-y sweetness, while the bergamot note at the heart adds a girlish charm without the floral element being too overpowering thanks to that watery lychee note that accompanies it. The peach base note, meanwhile, ensures that the fragrance remains sweet and playful throughout, never becoming overly serious with an overload of musk and wood notes. Fruity, floral, and powdery, the scent is cheerful and magnetic.

Now that you’ve got her number, it’s time call Maybe Baby. Even Carly Rae would agree.
