Givenchy Makeup Spring 2012 — Poppy Reds And Perky Pastels

Though most laypersons associate 19th century artist Claudet Monet with his beautiful water lily pond paintings, the French Impressionism pioneer derived inspiration from many of nature’s wonders — in fact, while living in Argenteuil from 1873 to 1878, Monet turned his attention to the rural landscapes around his domicile, producing a series of oil canvas paintings capturing the expanses of grass covered with bright red poppy blossoms.

Making a Splash with Dior’s Spring 2012 Vernis Nail Lacquer in Waterlily 504

Last week, I walked into a Sephora store with the intention of killing time before a morning meeting but, as tends to happen with us beauty junkies, what started out as an innocent store visit turned into a pocket-hurtin’ experience.

Daphne Guinness for MAC Collection — Heir Apparent?

daphne-guinness-for-mac-cosmetics-makeup-collection

Brewery heiress Daphne Guinness has all the makings of a fashion and beauty icon: she’s extremely thin (and, sadly, many consider this a pre-requisite to attaining any mode-related accolades, though we hope this standard changes soon); there’s an enigmatic quality to her face so that, even when posing for pictures, there’s a sense that she’s keeping some wonderful secret to herself; she’s an artist and yet she doesn’t announce it to the world with any sort of affectation (quite rare for a socialite); her style choices are often unorthodox (starting with her platinum blond mane featuring a single skunk-like raven strip) and yet she makes them seem fanciful and inspiring, even when they involve enormous lobster-claw shoes, a black lace veil covering an intricately braided updo,  a dominatrix-meets-equestrian ensemble with a back top hat, or sky-high platforms with no heel at the back that require walking on the balls of one’s feet and on the toes, as if wearing pointe shoes.

Red Lips, Wispy Top Knots, And “Lethal Love” Gradated Manicures at Jen Kao Spring 2012

The theatrical, origami-esque, paper headpieces worn by models in the Jen Kao Spring 2012 show encapsulated the independent spirit of the collection, a parade of separates and dresses in desert-like shades (ranging from sunset orange to safari green, ochre, tan, coral, beige); watercolored textiles in blue, pink, and yellow hues; dip-dyed fabrics that captured the transition between day and night; asymmetrical hemlines; slashes, tear-outs, and strappy details; geometric prints and checkerboard patterns; and spiderweb-like cut-out effects.

Brazilian designer Alexandre Herchcovitch steered away from his oft experimental, avant-garde aesthetic for Spring 2012, instead masterminding a collection rife with prim and ladylike silhouettes in muted pink and beige tones, with many of the retro-tinged frocks constructed using shimmering satin fabrics.
