Have you ever gazed at a vivid tube of lipstick and fantasized about how the hue would look on your pout, only to find out the color looked flat, faded, bleak, dry, or lusterless and one-dimensional?
Designer Sophie Théallet’s Spring 2011 collection channeled the independent spirit and unconventional brand of beauty that distinguished late Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, with a rich color palette ranging from ivory to blood red, soft black, burgundy, pottery-ready brown, and midnight blue.

For Spring 2011, in one of his most remarkable collections to date, Marc Jacobs toasted ’70s glamour, referencing everything from Jodie Foster’s character in Taxi Driver (think wide-brimmed hats and large floral prints) to Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love” single cover (remember the peasant-yet-haute feel of her bronzed brown, tiered ruffle skirt she wore in the photo?), Studio 54 glitz, the British Glam Rock movement (think David Bowie as Ziggy Stardust), and the luxe peasant look pioneered by Yves Saint Laurent (visualize peasant skirts, floral choker necklaces, off-the-shoulder blouses, and more).
To complement the ’70s, free-spirited but classic vibe of the ADAM Spring 2011 collection, the hair and makeup teams opted for a fresh, lived-in look: soft blue lids, neutral lips, and a static-y top knot ‘do.
In keeping with the desert inspiration of Fiona Cibani’s Ports 1961 Spring 2011 collection, lead MAC Cosmetics makeup artist Val Garland created a look that channeled a “nomadic gypsy jet-setter on holiday.” To create this look, she focused on juxtaposing shimmering bronze and copper shadows with soft, cool grays so that the contrast would create an enticing, subtle, demure smoky eye.
