Boring Nails Get Some Absolution With SinfulColors x Kylie Jenner “King Kylie” SinfulShine Nail Laquer Collection
Next time you browse through Kylie Jenner’s Instagram feed, pay close attention to her manicures — from the Squareletto nail shape she’s popularized, which has the same tapered look of the Stiletto nail but features a square tip with slightly rounded edges, to the colors she favors (the girl clearly has a soft spot for teal and mint shades!). Though I tend to grimace at our society’s obsession with celebrities (especially these social media and reality stars), there’s no denying their influence. Whether you hate it or love it, Kylie has clearly established herself as a tastemaker, with her 56 million IG followers eagerly mimicking many of the beauty and fashion looks she showcases on social media. It was a genius marketing move, then, for nail polish brand SinfulColors to tap Kylie Jenner to co-create a limited-edition collection of on-trend nail lacquers. The first chapter in this collaboration, then, is the SinfulColors King Kylie SinfulShine Collection, which features 20 nail polish shades, each available for $2.99 at Walmart, Walgreens, and Target stores.
The twenty shades in the collection are a combination of dazzling jewel tones, muted neutrals, and shining metallics — all designed as part of a two-step process, so that the color polish is brushed atop nails first, and then followed with a clear top coat for greater shine and longevity. The color selection captures Kylie’s aesthetic, so many fans will quickly associate shades with outfits the starlet wore, hair extensions she donned, lip colors she rocked while taking pouty-faced selfies, and so forth. Because these polishes are so affordable, young Kylie fans don’t have to sit on the sidelines, bemoaning their inability to afford these coveted colors (as so often tends to happen with celebrity-curated beauty collections).
And, even if you’re not a Kylie Jenner fan (or you’re just completely indifferent either way), you might be intrigued by some of the polishes in this collection simply due to their own virtue as playful, coquettish, modern, youthful colors.
I had the chance to try six shades, most of which have names that start with a “K” (again, branding is key with a capital K for the Kardashian and Jenner sisters!): Karnival, Kafe Latte, Knight Out, Kommando, Miss Majesty, and Minty Fresh. Check out photos and details on each of these hues below:
MISS MAJESTY
This is one of my favorite colors in the collection, and it’s consistent with Kylie’s style in that it’s among the shades with which the hair chameleon has experimented. The color is a soft pink lilac with an iridescent sheen that lends it a modern, adventurous, festival-ready feel. It has the exotic quality of a lilac orchid, but the green and teal tones that impart that near-holographic iridescence on the shade offer it a mysterious, fantastical spirit. The finish, meanwhile, is shiny and jewel-like.
KAFE LATTE
This metallic polish can best be described as a soft bronze shade with rose gold undertones and both pink and silver micro glitter. This is the kind of shade Kylie has been reaching for when creating natural, earthy, eye looks with just a bit of shine, and it’s as much of a must-have in the nail world as it is a necessary staple in any eyeshadow palette.
KNIGHT OUT
Another metallic in the collection is Knight Out, a gleaming gunmetal hue with silver glitter to add the requisite sparkle and party-ready feel.
MINTY FRESH
We all know Kylie loves minty green hues, so it only makes sense that she’d incorporate this shade into her collection. It was one of the shades I was most excited to swatch since it’s edgy and unexpected. It literally reminds me of a scoop of mint chocolate chip ice cream! That said, this nail polish, which has a creamy formulation, was among the hardest to apply since it has a tendency to clump and/or to bubble up a bit — if you look closely at the photos above, you’ll notice the tiny air bubbles. Now, I took all the necessary precautions to avoid this maddening bubbling (including rolling the bottle in between my hands as opposed to shaking it), but it took three different attempts before achieving a passable manicure (albeit with a few bubbles still). I may have gotten a bottle that was a dud (it happens!), so I by no means want to claim that, if you buy this polish, you’ll have the same results. That said, I’d advise that you read more reviews and check out more photos to see if others have expressed this same gripe. If a large number of people say they had trouble with this one, it might be a sign that the formulation is just too creamy and goopy, in which case you can let that inform your choice on whether or not to buy this particular polish.
KARNIVAL
Another of the collection’s jewel-inspired hues, this nail lacquer has a dark amethyst tone and scattered purple glitter to give it more dimension and add a cosmic sense of mystery.
KOMMANDO
I normally detest “nude” nail lacquers since, given that I’m so fair-skinned, they tend to make my hands look lifeless. The Kommando shade in this collection, however, was the perfect creamy nude since it has enough peachy-pink undertones to give it a burst of radiance. Though the color is primarily creamy in its consistency, it does feature tiny micro pearls with an iridescent finish, shifting from pink to teal to clear.
Overall, for $2.50 each, these shades offer a lot of bang for your buck. If you have to pick just one polish from this batch, I’d say Miss Majesty is your best bet, but you can pick up three or four options for what you’d typically spend on one OPI or essie bottle! Also, while it’s recommended that you use these alongside the SinfulColors SinfulShine Top Coat, it’s by no means a necessity — you can use any top coat with these and they’ll have the same level of shine. I tried them with my beloved Seche Vite Top Coat, and they were just as bold and beautiful.
