Best Beauty Looks At The 2016 Golden Globes AND How To Recreate Them!

Old Hollywood influenced many of the beauty looks seen on the red carpet at the Golden Globes, with Marilyn Monroe-esque waves, Sophia Loren-worthy cat eyes, and red lips reminiscent of Elizabeth Taylor all making an appearance. Still, while many of the hair and makeup looks paid homage to glamorous silver screen icons of decades past, they incorporated subtle details that grounded them in the modern age. Below, check out our favorite looks of the evening!

JENNIFER LOPEZ

Classic Hollywood elegance was the overriding theme when creating Jennifer Lopez’s look for the 2016 Golden Globes, which is why her team focused on sleek hair, flipped and parted to the side, and on deep red lips that were dark enough to create a sense of drama without venturing into vampy and gothic territory. Below, check out the details on how her hair and makeup looks were created!

HAIR:

Lorenzo Martin for L’Oreal Paris created Lopez’s simple but elegant hair look. To do so, he started by washing La Lopez’s strands with the L’Oréal Paris Advanced Haircare Extraordinary Oil Nourishing Shampoo and Conditioner, then spraying the L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle Boost It Air-Blown Texture Mist to her damp strands in order to increase volume and add texture. Using a small brush, he then divided her hair into small sections and blow dried each piece.

Once hair was dry, he primed strands for further heat styling by lightly spraying them with the L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle Boost It Blow Out Heat Spray. Next, using a 1″ barrel curling iron, he curled the hair in one direction, pinning it and letting it set.

After releasing the pin curls, he added a touch of the L’Oréal Paris Advanced Haircare Extraordinary Oil Lustrous Oil Serum touch to ends and to the front pieces of hair to give them more shine and tame any frizz. Last, he brushed out the hair and set the look with the L’Oréal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray.

 MAKEUP:

Mary Phillips for L’Oréal Paris masterminded the timeless makeup look for the evening, choosing to focus on Lopez’s skin and imparting her signature lit-from-within-glow to her complexion and on creating a statement lip that hearkened back to old Hollywood.

Mary started by hydrating and priming the  eyelids and lips with the Armani Prima Eye and Lip Contour Perfector. Next, she layered three sheer foundation colors to give Jennifer Lopez’s skin greater depth, mixing together the L’Oréal Paris True Match Lumi Cushion Foundation in C5.5 Natural Tan, 5.5 Perfect Beige, and W3 Nude Beige. 

To contour the face in a subtle manner, she used the darker shades in the Infallible Pro Contour Palette in 814 Medium along the jawline, underneath the cheek bones, on the temple and along the hairline, as well as down the sides of the the nose. The highlighter hue in the compact, meanwhile, was applied to the center of the forehead, down the ridge of the nose, directly above the jawline, and underneath the arches of the brows. Next, she swept the L’Oreal Paris True Match Super-Blendable Blush in Spiced Plum C7-8 to the apples of cheeks.

For the eyes, Phillips envisioned a warm, earthy look with just a hint of golden sheen. She started by applying the L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Eyeshadow Mono in 306, then worked Shade 201 into the crease and added Shade 205 to the center of eyelids for a dose of shine, also lightly brushing this final shade along the lower lash line.

She then lined eyes very lightly using the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Black Velvet Liner along the upper lashline, increasing the width of the line as she moved from the inner corners of eyes to the outer corners but steering away from flicks and wings along the outer corners. She then layered the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Matte-Matic Liner atop it, making sure to achieve full coverage and getting in between lashes to give the illusion of a full lashline. She also applied the Matte-Matic Liner to the lower lashline ever so lightly. She finished to look but coating lashes with the L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Superstar Mascara.

Jennifer Lopez’s lips, however, were the crowning element of the makeup look. To create the shade, Phillips mixed three different gloss hues: the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Matte Gloss in Rouge Envy, Nude Allure, and Forbidden Kiss. Though she mixed all three hues together to create a unique custom shade, she also contoured the lips as she worked, making sure the darker colors were on the outside of the mouth and that the inside of the mouth was a hint lighter so as to create a fuller lip effect. These slight tonal variations made all the difference in giving Lopez’s pout more dimension and keeping it from being a one-note look.

JAIMIE ALEXANDER

The Blindspot actress may be a relative newcomer to the red carpet, but she’s already making an impact on the style and beauty fronts. Since her dress was a deep emerald green color with touches of black, makeup artist Jeffrey Paul, working with IT Cosmetics, decided to create a regal beauty look that emphasized Alexander’s strong features — particularly her hazel eyes, dark lashes, and strong brows.

Rather than applying tons of foundation or contouring for hours, Paul kept Alexander looking fresh-faced, relying primarily on the IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Anti-Aging Concealer in Light to conceal any dark under-eye circles and diffuse light so as to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. To give her face a hint of coverage, meanwhile, he used the IT Cosmetics Eyelift in a Tube in Light-Medium. This breakthrough product is a dual-sided tube, with one end featuring the Bye Bye Under Eye Concealer (and a handy wand with which to apply it) and the other end featuring the Hello Light Liquid Brightener (again with a useful sponge-tip wand). Though it was designed for use along the eye area, the Eyelift in a Tube can also be used as a foundation, which is what Paul did in order to give Alexander a hint of coverage and accentuate the high points of her face.

Striking, slightly smoky eyes were key to this makeup look — as were bold and well-defined brows. To enhance Alexander’s arches, Paul used the IT Cosmetics Brow Power Super Skinny Universal Waterproof Brow Pencil in Dark Brown, which features a 1.4mm tip that mimics the exact width of a real brow hair, allowing you to fill in any gaps and have the final result be incredibly believable and realistic. To give the eyes drama, Paul relied on the IT Cosmetics Liner Love in Black, a waterproof gel liner that offers amazing pigment pay-off and coverage, applying it using the IT Cosmetics Tightliner 10-in-1 Dual Ended Brush #13, which allows for greater precision. He rimmed Alexander’s eyes with the black color, accentuating both the upper and lower lash lines and adding a tiny flick at the outer corners. To enhance her lashes, Paul prepped the with the IT Cosmetics Tightline Full Lash Length Black Primer Mascara, then coated them with the IT Cosmetics Superhero Elastic Stretch Volumizing Mascara (which hits  ITCosmetics.com on February 16th).

Given the dark and striking nature of the eye look, Paul chose to keep the lip look very muted and delicate so as to strike a lovely balance. To do so, he applied the IT Cosmetics YLBB Your Lips But Better Waterproof Lip Liner Stain in Blushing Nude to Alexander’s pout, a rose nude shade.

LADY GAGA

Anyone who tuned into the Golden Globes noticed that Gaga was channeling Marylin Monroe — not only due to her choice of dress but also thanks to her curled ‘do and vintage-flavored makeup. Here’s the scoop on how her look was attained!

HAIR:

Celebrity hairstylist Frederic Aspiras created the hairstyle using KMS California products. Starting with clean and towel-dried hair, he started by applying the KMS California TAMEFRIZZ Smoothing Lotion from roots to ends, combing the product through to ensure it was evenly distributed. Next, he sprayed the KMS California ADDVOLUME Volumizing Spray to the roots in order to add volume therein.  To speed up the blow-drying process, the then misted strands with the KMS California FREESHAPE Quick Blow Dry Spray and began drying hair, working section by section and using a medium round brush, twirling it up and around for greater volume.

Once hair was dry, Aspiras reached for a 1-inch curling iron. Taking 1-inch sections of hair, he began to curl the hair back, away from the face. After curling each section, he used either a small or medium velcro roller to set the curl. After 15-20 minutes, once the curls were set, he removed the velcro rollers and brushed the hair out using a sable bristle brush, finishing the look with a mist of the KMS California HAIRPLAY Playable Texture to give the curls and waves hold without making them appear stiff.

MAKEUP:

Using Lancôme and Giorgio Armani products, makeup artist Sarah Tanno created a look inspired by Sophia Loren but incorporating modern accents.

To make Gaga’s skin appear radiant, Tanno started by applying the Giorgio Armani Prima Glow-on Moisturizing Balm to her skin, thereby hydrating the complexion and giving it a fresh vibrancy. Next, she concealed any redness, dark circles, and blemishes using the new Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra Makeup Stick in 210 Buff. To give her skin coverage but maintain a dewy finish, she applied the Giorgio Armani Maestro Glow Foundation in #5.5 all over her complexion. Next, she contoured Gaga’s features ever so slightly, using the Giorgio Armani Maestro Bronzer in #100 and applying its beneath cheekbones, along the jawline, and atop the forehead, tracing the hairline. Next, she buffed the Giorgio Armani Fluid Sheer in #5 to create a peachy glow along the cheekbones.

Tanno then focused on Gaga’s eyes, creating a classic cat eye but using a navy metallic shade for a contemporary spin. She started by applying a neutral wash of color using the Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill Quad in #11. To accentuate the natural shape of the eye, Tanno used the Lancôme Le Stylo Waterproof Long Lasting Eyeliner in Noir Intense, tracing the upper lash line and the lower lash line. Next, she made Gaga’s eyes appear wider and added some contrast by working the Lancôme Le Crayon Khôl Eyeliner in Blanc into the inner water line. To exaggerate the shape of the upper lash line, she layered the Lancôme Drama Liqui-Pencil Longwear Kohl Eyeliner in Parisian Night atop the pre-existing black hue, adding a feline flick at the outer corners. She also added a hint of the Giorgio Armani Eye Tint in #2, a highly pigmented metallic blue shade. She finished the look with the Giorgio Armani Eyes To Kill Quad in #5, which incorporates a range of moody blue shadows. To give Gaga va-va-va-voom lashes, she coated them with the Lancôme Grandiôse Mascara in Noir Mirifique and added false mink lashes. Brows, meanwhile, were accentuated with the Giorgio Armani Eye and Brow Maestro in #2 and #5.

Lips were kept soft and demure to balance out the look. Tanno used the Lancôme Le Lipstique Lip Colouring Stick in Clair as the base, then mixed the Lancôme Color Design Sensational Effects Matte Lipcolor in Inconspicuous with the Lancôme Absolue Nourishing Lip Balm Honey-in-Rose.

EMMY ROSSUM

Red lips were a big trend on Sunday evening, and Emmy Rossum stood out for having one of the boldest takes on the look. Again, her beauty look paid homage to old Hollywood glamour, with winged eyeliner and red lips as the key points. Still, there was a modern element to the look thanks largely to its unfussy, almost effortless feel.

Makeup artist Jo Baker kept the look simple by eschewing any eyeshadow, instead applying only the Rimmel London Exaggerate Eyeshadow Primer all over naked lips to  keep them matte and create the ideal canvas for a dramatic eyeliner-based look. To map the desires eye shape, the used the Rimmel London Smoke ‘n Shine Gel Liner, applying it with a fine brush so as to “dry sketch” the look and create a base for the liquid liner. Once she’d achieved the desired shape on both eyes, she winged the outer corners, again using a fine brush. Next, she reached for the Rimmel London Scandaleyes Thick & Thin Eyeliner, which features a calligraphy-style applicator that allows for great precision and deposits a rich black color, using the liner’s fine point to swipe a thin line close to the inner lashline, then thickening the line as the moved across the lid. For the flick along the outer corners, she tilted the liner, using the thicker and flatter part of the brush to lift the edges and fill in any gaps. She finished the eye look with two coats of the Rimmel London SuperCurler 24Hr Mascara.

Baker chose not to add too much shimmer to Rossum’s complexion, instead focusing on natural-looking coverage and a hint of blush. First, she prepped skin with the Rimmel London Lasting Finish Primer and then applied the Rimmel London Stay Matte Liquid Mouse Foundation, blending the #TrueIvory and #Ivory shades together. To enhance Rossum’s cheekbones, she relied on the Sculpting Palette Designed by Kate Moss for Rimmel in Coral Glow, using the middle color #2 and swiping long brushstrokes upwards in the hollows of the cheeks to create a healthy, fresh-faced effect. 

To create the bold red lip, Baker relied on Rimmel London’s new The One and Only Lipstick in Best of the Best, a pigment-rich, true red hue with a demure matte finish.

LILY JAMES

Both the hair and beauty looks designed for Lily James were meant to evoke a glamorous but carefree attitude reminiscent of the vibe of the French Riviera in the 1970s.

HAIR:

Ashely Streicher for SHOW Beauty created the soft, slightly tousled waves James donned on the red carpet. To create the look, she started by spraying the SHOW Beauty Sheer Thermal Protect to her clean and dry hair so as to prepare strands for heat styling. To add volume, she then sprayed the SHOW Beauty Divine Thickening Mist at the roots. Next, she gave James a center part and divided her hair into sections, lightly misting each piece with the  SHOW Beauty Premiere Finishing Spray to each section to keep strands in place.

Next, using a 1 1/2 inch curling iron, she curled each section, but the key to the look was switching the direction in which strands were curled: whereas the hairs at the nape of the neck were curled on one direction, the hairs in the sections above it were curled in the opposite direction so as to give the hair more body and create a tousled wave effect. Each row of curls was then secured with a setting pin.

For even more dimension, Streicher decided to tackle the top layer of hair, the area around the center part, using a flat iron rather than a curling iron, thereby forming looser waves that appeared slightly undone. Once finished, she unpinned each section and brushed it out, spraying the SHOW Beauty Premiere Dry Shampoo and a touch of the SHOW Beauty Premiere Finishing Spray to give the look both hold and volume.

MAKEUP:

The youthful makeup look that harmonized with James’ dreamy Marchesa gown was the handiwork of Jenn Streicher, who relied on Charlotte Tilbury Beauty products.

To give her skin a youthful feel, Streicher started by applying Charlotte’s Magic Cream to the entire face and the Charlotte Tilbury Magic Eye Rescue along the orbital area so as to hydrate and replenish the complexion. Next, she applied the Charlotte Tilbury Wonderglow along the T-Zone (down the ridge of her nose and along the forehead), so as to give this area a soft-focus finish. She then applied the Charlotte Tilbury Magic Foundation in 6 Medium (available in March) over the entire face.

To sculpt James’ face, Streicher applied the Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze & Glow in Light-Medium below cheekbones, along the jawline, and at the temples. Next, she highlighted her key features by applying the Charlotte Tilbury Beach Stick in Moon Beach to cheekbones and down the center of the nose. Cheeks, meanwhile, were given a pop of color with the Charlotte Tilbury Cheek to Chic in Love Glow duo. Streicher used the duo’s outer shade across the cheekbones,, then swept the inner shade along the apples of cheeks.

Moving on to the eyes, Streicher applied the Charlotte Tilbury Colour Chameleon Color Morphing Eyeshadow Pencil in Bronzed Garnet, a lustrous deep bronze color with reddish undertones, across the lids, then lined the upper lashline and the waterline with Rock ‘N’ Kohl in Barbarella Brown, a dark brown perfect for earthy smoky eye looks. Next, she swept the smoke shade of the Charlotte Tilbury Luxury Palette in The Sophisticate along the lash line and the corners of the eyes. For a bit more punch, she applied the Charlotte Tilbury Eyes to Mesmerise Cream Eyeshadow in Jean, a shimmering pink gold champagne shade, and Mona Lisa, a warm amber bronze, across the lids. For the final touch, Streicher applied four coats of the Charlotte Tilbury Full Fat Lashes mascara to both the top and bottom lashes.

A nude lip completed the look, which Streicher created by applying the Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G Lipstick in Bitch Perfect followed by the Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat Lip Liner in Iconic Nude.
