Beauty Look At Monika Chiang SS13 Presentation — Glossy Coral Lips, Major Lashes, And Straight Back-Combed Hair

The beauty look for the Monika Chiang SS13 presentation was one that emphasized youth and innocence via a minimalist approach to both makeup and hair. Lancôme National Makeup Artist Darais created the understated makeup look, which he described as a “wet” look, with dewy skin and glossy lips reigning supreme. “Too much makeup makes you look older,” Darais said while backstage (check out the video interview above). “This is a very fresh, clean, kind of wet look.”

To achieve the look, Darais started by applying the Lancôme Rénergie Lift Makeup SPF 20 to models’ faces in order to attain full coverage while also infusing a soft dewy quality to their complexions. He then relied on Lancôme Star Bronzer to contour the planes of the face, applying it below the cheekbone, along the jawline, and on the forehead. Next, he relied on a new blush, set for a Spring 2013 release, to give models flushed cheeks with more of a tangerine tint as opposed to the traditional peony and rose pinks. The new blush  (which is as yet unnamed) actually features two tones, a tangerine square at the center and a warm medium pink along the exterior, framing the tangerine color. Darais blended both shades together and dusted the color along the apples of the cheeks.

To create the understated eye look, Darais relied on neutral eye shadow shades. He started by applying the Lancôme Color Design eyeshadow in Latte, a cream hue, to the entire lid, then added Waif shade, a peony pink color. Next, he swept the Double Stranded shade, a taupe-ish brown shade with a matte finish, along the outer corners of eyes and along the crease. To make eyes appear brighter and more alert, he applied the Lancôme Le Crayon Kohl in Blanc, a chalk white hue, along the inner rim of the lower lash line. But the key to the look, according to Darais, was the mascara. To give the models a coquettish look, he applied the new Lancôme Hypnose Star Mascara, making sure to define each and every single lash.

On the lips, Darais applied the Lancôme Rouge in Love Lipstick in 128 Ever So Sweet, a light coral shade, then blotted lips and added a hint of foundation to further soften the color. Last, he applied the Lancôme Juicy Tubes gloss in Pure, a clear shade, for an ultra-shiny finish.

Leon Gorman for Cutler/Redken Salon commandeered the team of hair stylists backstage, creating a look that was soft and simple and wouldn’t compete for attention when played against Chiang’s Spring 2013 collection, which featured rather strong shapes.  Hair, then, was blow dried straight and backcombed along the crown to create a bit of volume at the front.

To create the look, Gorman started by prepping models’ tresses with the Redken Full Frame Protective Volumizing Mousse and Redken Fashion Work 12. He then blow dried their hair, rolling the hair backwards and away from the face while doing so. Once dry, he backcombed the front section of hair — from the hairline to the nape — thereby creating a rounded shape. To flatten the sides and give the look even more lift, he took a small section of hair from each side of the head and pulled it back into a low ponytail, securing it with an elastic and concealing it with the rest of the straight strands.  Last, he sprayed the Redken Forceful 23 Spray to give the look hold.
