Red Carpet Missteps — Worst Dressed At The 2017 Golden Globe Awards
While there were plenty of stand-out looks at the 2017 Golden Globes, there were also a handful of #epicfail fashion moments on the red carpet. Some were minor offenses (take, for instance, the Becky Home Ec-y embellishments on the skirt of Jessica Biel’s gown), while others were major fashion felonies. Below, check out the stars who went rogue on the red carpet and, in the process, made us all wince.
Nicole Kidman
I happened to tune into the Golden Globes right as Nicole Kidman was making her entrance. Immediately, my husband asked, “Is that Nicole Kidman? What happened to her face?” “Too much makeup, dear,” I answered, adding, “She has so much blush on! It’s like when Bridget Jones did her makeup in that dark cab.” We snickered a bit as the camera pulled out to reveal an even bigger red carpet faux-pas: Kidman’s wack-a-doodle dress. Without the sheer sleeves, which start midway along the upper arm area and then extend well past her wrists, the dress would be unfortunate. With them, it’s the very embodiment of tackiness. The fact that the white boning of the bustier-like bodice is clearly visible through the sheer fabric adds to the cheap Fredrick’s of Hollywood feel of the gown, but the puffy balloon trimmings at the top of the sleeves function as the rusty nail on the coffin.
Felicity Jones
The Force clearly did not guide the Rogue One star when she chose this pink-and-black Gucci dress. This overworked design is a dizzying hodgepodge of decorative details that together create a deafening cacophony. First, there’s the trompe l’oeil ruffle print on the bodice’s sheer overlay. Then there’s the black beadwork adorning the scalloped hemline of the layered hot pink skirt. And, completing the tragic trifecta, we have the velvety pink belt with the shimmery gunmetal bow detail. Who was her stylist? A five-year-old? Did this dress come with a My Little Pony necklace or a gel pen with a pom-pom on one end?
Janelle Monae
Sure, she was probably excited for her first trip to the Golden Globes, but did Janelle Monae need to sneak in her own oversize confetti by stitching it onto her dress? Those black paillettes sewn onto the gown’s skirt to create a polka dot effect cheapen the dress so much it winds up looking like a Party City costume. Not that the paillettes were the only offensive aspect of this dress — that bubble skirt may have been intended to exude a sense of whimsy but, given the setting, it looks as out of place and outdated as a scrunchie or leg warmers.
Claire Foy
I cheered when Claire Foy was recognized for her spectacular performance as a young Queen Elizabeth II in Netflix’s The Crown, but I couldn’t quite hold a coronation ceremony for Foy in the fashion department. The ill-fitting puffy sleeves of her sequined pink Duro Olowu gown and the purple sash-like waist detail all made me think of a bad ’80s prom, something akin to Molly Ringwald’s dress in Pretty in Pink or Drew Barrymore’s horrifying frock in Never Been Kissed. So unbefitting of a queen!
Carrie Underwood
This shade of pink looks stunning on Carrie Underwood, but there are entirely too many petal-like ruffles on the bodice of her Iris Serban gown. A handful of Twitter users pointed out that the ruffles resembled buttercream frosting rosettes, joking that her gown was made by Magnolia Bakery, and I can’t disagree with the comparison. To me, the gown also looks like she snipped a few pairs of RuffleButts baby girl bloomers and stitched them together. It’s just a travesty!
Emily Ratajkowski
We get it, Emily Ratajkowski: you have an amazing figure, you’re not afraid to flaunt it, and you think snapping nude selfies is a manifestation of female empowerment. But, seriously, can you at least consider putting some clothes on for a red carpet event? This silky yellow Reem Accra gown didn’t need so many many risqué elements: the sky-high center slit (which, sure enough, led to a wardrobe malfunction) combined with the the ultra low plunging neckline cheapened the design. The worst part: the tie-like collar, which encircled her neck and then plummeted down the center of her chest, all the way down to her, er, lady parts. It was essentially a bejeweled arrow pointing to her honey pot which, as it turned out, wasn’t exactly well concealed. Do we really need to know the secrets her OB-GYN keeps? I’ll certainly pass!
Zoe Saldana
If I placed a Peptobismol tablet next to a Bendadryl pill, the color contrast would resemble that created by Zoe Saldana’s ruffled Gucci dress at the 2017 Golden Globes. In other words, even before you take into account the skirt’s layers of angled ruffles or that overly juvenile metallic pink bow belt, this gown was doomed. She may guard the galaxy, but someone needed to save her from this dress!
Heidi Klum
Sure, it wasn’t as bad as that Big Bird-ish Versace dress with the single long sleeve that she wore to the 2015 Emmys, but Heidi Klum’s J. Mendel dress at the 2017 Golden Globes was still one of the night’s biggest disappointments. While many of us can appreciate the idea of a bold, graphic, black-and-white gown with a geometric motif, the needless cut-outs along the sides of this strapless dress and the gaudy placement of the black sequins and paillettes (which wind up looking like Christmas tree garlands dyed a glossy black shade) all make the execution of this cool concept fall way short.
