Though the 3.1 Phillip Lim line is known for its sporty overtones and minimalist street chic aesthetic, the designer’s 10th anniversary collection stepped outside of the concrete jungle to applaud the wondrousness of nature, with a “Stop and Smell the Roses” theme that embraced dirtiness and organic colors and textures — so much so that the set incorporated mounds of organic earth. To personify the 3.1 Phillip Lim Spring 2016 collection would be to liken it to a feminine tomboy, a scrappy girl who likes to splash in the mud while wearing ribbons in her hair.

In keeping with the collection’s earthy color palette and androgynous silhouettes, lead makeup artist for NARS Cosmetics Francelle Daly designed a look that felt simple and natural but featured just a hint of romantic color via clean lines drawn along a portion of the upper and lower lash lines. To create the look, Daly started by massaging the skin with the NARSskin Luminous Moisture Cream, then smoothing on the NARS Velvet Matte Skin Tint (new for Spring 2016) and Stick Concealer as needed so as to make the skin appear naked and untouched.

Rather than rimming models’ eyes with liner, Daly accentuated the outer half of the upper lash line and the inner corners of eyes, extending the pigmented color to cover nearly a third of the lower lash line. The same technique was used for all the models, but half flaunted an aquatic blue hue thanks to the NARS Solomon Islands Eye Paint while others  rocked the NARS Black Valley Eye Paint. Lashes, meanwhile, were kept bare and mascara-free while brows were brushed upward and set with the NARS Oural Brow Gel.

To hydrate lips and give pouts just a hint of shimmer without coating them with color, Daly applied the NARS Pure Sheer SPF Lip Treatment in Bianca, featuring just a touch of pearlescence.

Sally Hansen Global Color Ambassador Madeline Poole led the nail team backstage, creating a look that celebrated the beauty of soil and wood in an untouched state. To that end, all the girls wore the Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure nail polish in All Bark, a creamy brown hue. To give the look an unexpected and athletic edge, meanwhile, Poole drew a sporty horizontal stripe in a chrome silver hue across each nail, varying the thickness of each line, changing the placement of each line, and alternating between a single line and two stripes. In the end, then, all the models flaunted organic manis with precise and crisp metallic lines but no two models had the exact same look — a perfect choice given that no 3.1 Phillip Lim girl is ever lost in a crowd!
