It’s finally time to shed our winter exoskeletons — those heavy wool coats, chunky sweaters, turtlenecks, wool trousers, and thick tights that started feeling like a cumbersome part of our beings, a built-in armor against the bitter cold — and wouldn’t it be grand to reveal smooth and radiant skin (albeit a bit paler than usual) as opposed to scaly, flaky, ashy limbs? Enter the new Suave Professionals Sea Mineral Infusion body care collection, which is designed to gently exfoliate, purify, smooth, and replenish the skin.

The collection consists of four products: the Suave Professionals Sea Mineral Infusion Purifying Body Wash ($3 at drugstores; visit Walgreens.com), the Suave Professionals Sea Mineral Infusion Exfoliating Body Wash ($3 at drugstores; visit Walgreens.com), the Suave Professionals Sea Mineral Infusion Replenishing Body Lotion ($4.99 at drugstores; visit Walgreens.com), and the Suave Professionals Sea Mineral Infusion Spray Lotion (5.99 at drugstores; visit Target.com). As you can see, thanks to Suave’s commitment to bringing costumers high-quality products at affordable prices, you could potentially buy every product in the range without spending over $20 — the average price of a single body wash from one of the countless brands stocked at Sephora (a Philosophy 3-in-1 Shampoo, Shower Gel & Bubble Bath costs $18, a Korres Shower Gel rings in at $19.50, and a Fresh Shower Gel typically goes for $20).

But, of course, the question becomes: are these products as gentle to skin, as effective at cleansing and moisturizing, and as aromatically indulgent as their higher-priced counterparts? In this case, the answer is a resounding yes. The Suave Professionals Sea Mineral Infusion collection features products formulated with Dead Sea salts. Now, if you’ve read about the Dead Sea, you know that it’s a landlocked lake located between Israel and Palestine (to the west) and Jordan (to the east) and that it boasts an extraordinarily high salt content —  with a salt concentration of nearly 35%, it’s considered the deepest saline lake in the world. The greater density of these hyper saline waters allows bathers to remain buoyant with minimal effort. And while no flora and fauna can survive when their habitat is a desert with little rainfall and their sole body of water is typified by such a high salinity (hence the name “Dead Sea”), the salts within the lake (and its mud) have been found to offer a range of therapeutic and cosmetic benefits. The Dead Sea has a unique mineral composition —in most oceans, sodium chloride accounts for most of the salt content (approximately 85%), whereas the salt in the Dead Sea is a a mixture of chlorides like magnesium chloride, calcium chloride, sodium chloride, and potassium chloride. Through simple extraction processes, then, it’s possible to retrieve minerals like calcium, zinc, potassium, bromide, and magnesium and incorporate these trace minerals into spa-ready formulations.

Why are these minerals beneficial within a skincare context? Well, they play a role in intercellular communication, kickstarting cellular division and cellular regeneration processes. They also help to transfer nutrients across cell membranes, maintain the skin’s optimal pH balance, and fortify the skin’s lipid barrier. These Dead Sea-derived marine extracts, then, really can help you achieve radiant, supple, smooth skin.

Both of the body washes in the Suave Professionals Dead Sea Mineral Infusion collection aim to purify the skin. I personally love the Suave Sea Mineral Infusion Exfoliating Body Wash because it polishes away dead skin cells but does so in a manner that’s gentle and non-abrasive. As someone with rather dry and delicate skin, I tend to favor sugar-based exfoliants since they’re typically less harsh (plus sugar is a natural humectant). It’s typically been my experience that salt-based exfoliants are best suited for women with oily skin, so I was really concerned about whether this exfoliating body wash would irritate my skin. To my delight, it didn’t at all. The salt particles in this body wash are tiny grains that, fortuitously, lack the jagged edges that can make salt-based scrubs that much harsher. When you apply to your skin using slow and meticulous circular motions, then rinse off, you’ll notice that skin looks more radiant and feels softer — without any achy sensations, dryness, redness, or inflammation.

Now, since it would be foolhardy to exfoliate every single day, I’d suggest using the aforementioned treatment no more than twice a week, alternating between that product and the Suave Professionals Purifying Body Wash. This body wash also contains those Dead Sea minerals that will fortify and replenish skin, but it has a creamier, more indulgent consistency, and it lathers beautifully, plus I found it to feel more moisturizing than its counterpart. Both products, meanwhile, have a delightful aquatic aroma that will have you fantasizing about trips to the beach.

After showering and patting your skin dry, it’s time to moisturize! The Suave Professionals Sea Mineral Infusion Replenishing Body Lotion features a lightweight and almost airy consistency and is readily absorbed by the skin, leaving it feeling supple, smooth, and comfortable. Like the other products in the collection, it boasts a tranquil marine aroma which is extremely pleasant and enhances your at-home spa experience, without the scent lingering for too long thereafter (which could lead to it clashing with your favorite perfume). That said, if your skin is parched, you might need a slightly more potent, thicker, balm-like moisturizer that contains shea butter, jojoba oil, mango seed butter, avocado oil, or other heavier emollients.

Thus far, this has proven to be my favorite Suave Professionals body care collection — and it’s so affordable! So why not test the waters out for yourself?
