The Scoop on Sarah Hyland’s Hair and Makeup at the 2014 Emmy Awards
Even though she sky-rocketed to fame playing the often vapid, ditzy, and boy crazy Haley on Modern Family, Sarah Hyland is, in actuality, quite the clever and complex young woman. And, unlike Haley, who favors typical mall rat fare like jeans, printed tops, open cardigans, and hoop earrings, Sarah knows how to serve up Hollywood glamour — a talent she displayed at the 2014 Emmy Awards, when she wore a playful. custom made Christian Siriano ensemble and completed the look with a voluminous bun and neutral makeup that conveyed a timeless sophistication.
Dove partnered with celebrity hair stylist Ryan Richman, who masterminded Sarah’s slightly windswept bun, which gave her the grace of a ballerina but the effortless chicness of a young Hollywood star. To create the look, Richman started by applying three to four pumps of the Dove Care Dry Oil Nourishing Treatment to Sarah’s damp tresses in order to soften them and boost shine. He then combed the product through the hair to make sure it was evenly distributed and set out to begin drying her locks. But, before blow drying each section, he made sure to apply a pump of Dove Frizz-Free Shine Serum to that piece of hair, thereby taming fly-aways and keeping humidity from wreaking havoc on the final ‘do. Richman then blow dried large sections of hair using a large, round, boar bristle brush — which he recommends for creating body while smoothing strands — and directing the hair away from the face, towards the center of the head, where the hair would be secured into an updo. As he continued to brush strands, this time working them upwards towards the top of the head, he sprayed the Dove Style + Care Extra Hold Hairspray directly onto the brush so that, as the brush came into contact with strands, it smoothed any fly-aways and helped to keep everything in place. Next, he secured her hair in a ponytail and back combed the hair inside the ponytail with a brush, spritzing it with hair spray.He then twisted and wrapped the hair into a voluminous bun and secured the style with bobby pins. To create a slightly mussy look, he pulled out tiny pieces of hair with his fingertips and used a rattail comb to pluck out strands for a bit of a downtown-y, undone effect.
Since Sarah’s beauty look was inspired by old Hollywood glamour (albeit a modern interpretation of it), makeup artist Allan Avendaño says they spent time looking at portraits of Audrey Hepburn to use as a reference. Understated and pretty, the makeup made Sarah look fresh-faced and natural but undeniably feminine and pretty.
Before applying any makeup, Avendaño applied the Orlane Super-Moisturizing Light Cream to Sarah’s visage and dabbed the Orlane Absolute Skin Recovery Care Eye Contour around her peepers so as to hydrate her skin and make it smoother and more radiant.
Next, he applied the Dior Glow Maximizer Light Boosting Primer and followed with the Diorskin Star Foundation in Medium Beige #030 along the center of Sarah’s face and, to create a contouring effect, applied the slightly darker Honey Beige #040 shade along the outside perimeters of the face, blending it with the #30 shade. Next, he hid any under-eye circles with the Diorskin Star Concealer in #003, adding just a dab of the shade #002 to create the perfect color match. To contour her face, he then brushed on the Diorskin Nude Tan Healthy Glow Bronzing Powder in Moka #007 along the hollows of her cheekbones, her hairline, and her jawline. To combat shine along the T-Zone area, he patted the Diorskin Nude Natural Glow Fresh Powder Makeup along Sarah’s forehead and nose.
To give Sarah va-va-va-voom lashes, Avendaño started by applying the Diorshow Maximizer Lash Plumping Serum to both her upper and lower lashes. Next, he applied a few coats of the Dior Addict It-Lash Mascara in It-Black #092 to her top lashes and a coat of the Diorshow New Look Mascara in New Look Black #090 to bottom lashes. Brows, meanwhile, were filled in to make a strong statement with the Diorshow Brow Styler in Universal Brown #001.
Similarly, Sarah’s pout was an understated nude hue. To create the look Avendaño lined and filled her lips with the Rouge Dior Contour Lip Liner Pencil in Jungle Brown #525 and applied the Rouge Dior Lipstick in Trench #319 above it to give lips a creamy, mocha-tinged nude hue.
