When I was younger, I often heard women say that short girls shouldn’t wear maxi dresses but I’ve found that to be completely untrue since at 5’0″, I can rock an ankle-length or floor-length dress with the best of them!  And, come summer, I always enjoy wearing maxi dresses since they’re typically so airy and breezy but can also look really chic and feminine. Yesterday, then, I decided to take my new maxi dress from Forever 21 (which cost only $29.99!) for its first spin around New York City.

The dress, although primarily black, features a mesmerizing print of butterfly wings in shades of teal, sky blue, saffron yellow, and amber. The cut of the dress works perfectly with the butterfly motif since the halter top neckline lets the shoulders be free and unfettered while two slits along the sides let the skirt billow and flutter like butterflies would. Also lovely: the opaque skirt beneath the butterfly printed chiffon overlay reaches just slightly above the knee, creating a sense of sheerness and transparency along the lower half of the dress.

Since I wanted to keep the look casual but fanciful, I bypassed heels and wedges in favor of some multi-strap sandals from Zigi Soho featuring chain, bead, and charm embellishments. Similarly, I kept the outfit Bohemian by opting for a straw tote with faux black leather straps from the Jason Wu for Target collection.

And, as usual, I went for the gusto with my choice of jewelry: the brass Bing Bang Sacred Geometry Drop Earrings ($138at BingBangNYC.com),which feature intricate cut-outs that give the pieces an almost mystical quality; a stack of gold Amrita Singh bangles on my right wrist; a hefty Kendra Scott ring with a wide teal-colored stone; and a vintage-looking, star-shaped H&M ring with inset rhinestones.

What do you think of the outfit? Have you been wearing your maxi dresses this summer?
