Mara Hoffman Launches Home Goods Line At Anthropologie
Combining tribal-inspired motifs with tropical florals, fluorescent colors, mystical symbols, and elaborate geometric patterns, every print fashion Mara Hoffman creates is positively hypnotic, a mind-bending, surrealist collage of Eastern and Western symbolism, of fantastical and realistic imagery, of modern and ancient visuals. Now, Hoffman’s dynamic prints can make their way into your abode — and not just into your closet or your bureau drawers. Thanks to a collaboration with Anthropologie, Hoffman has forayed into the home goods realm for the very first time, releasing a charming collection of pillows, duvet covers, pillow shams, rugs, curtains, candles, and more.
Bohemian motifs abound in the collection — particularly in the form of feathers, as can be seen in the Mara Hoffman Duvet ($228 to $268 at Anthropologie.com) pictured above at top, which showcases overlapping feathers of various shapes — some elongated to resemble a bird’s tail feathers and others rounder as if mirroring the eyes of peacock feathers, all the barbs on their vanes and their central rachis intricately etched. Feather motifs aside, the duvet cover captures the playfulness ingrained in all of Hoffman’s prints via its color scheme, which cleverly combines shades of aqua, royal blue, teal, turquoise, lime green, and periwinkle blue. Made of cotton, the duvet is available in four sizes: Twin ($228), Full ($238), Queen ($248), and King ($268). Two different sham designs accompany the duvet cover: the Mara Hoffman Euro Sham ($58 at Anthropologie.com), shown second above, which measures 26 square inches; and the Mara Hoffman Shams ($88 to $98 at Anthropologie.com), a set of two traditional pillow shams that measure 20″ by 26″ and feature a classic envelope closure.
Other bedding options include the Mara Hoffman Coverlet ($228 to $248 at Anthropologie.com), shown fourth above, which comes in two sizes: Queen (measuring 86 square inches) and King (measuring 96 square inches). The coverlet features a medicine wheel-inspired print (a common image in Hoffman’s work), with each arched band filled with a different design: one with stacked vermillion triangles arranged to resemble windmill blades, another with saffron yellow plants and leafy branches, another with a row of upward-facing triangles and perfectly round dots hovering above their apexes, and so forth. If the duvet cover had an aquatic color theme, then this one is its fiery counterpart, with vermilion, poppy red, saffron yellow, and stark black designs against the cream-colored backdrop. And the collection isn’t limited to bedding. One of my favorite trinkets is the Mara Hoffman Candle ($36 at Anthropologie.com), a pyramid-shaped ceramic candle with a removable top lid that reveals the vegetable-and-paraffin wax candle inside which has a sandalwood teak aroma that blends saffron and cinnamon with notes of clove and dark teak wood for a spicy, mysterious, and woody scent. The candle measures 5.5″ in height and 6″ in width and features a medicine wheel-inspired motif along its base and a seeing eye design along the pyramid tip.
Another fun offering — especially for true Bohemian types — is the Mara Hoffman Floor Pillow ($168 at Anthropologie.com), a hand screen-printed linen pillow with a comfy polyfill interior that measures 30 square inches. Perfect for reading a book, meditating, or laying and listening to music, this floor pillow is the grown-up equivalent of the bean bags we all favored as pre-teens, and the electric color scheme and kinetic pattern will add a warm and adventurous spirit to any room.
Those who like to journal, can lay on the floor pillow and jot their thoughts in one of the Mara Hoffman Journals ($12 at Anthropologie.com), which feature 200 unlined pages, making them perfect for sketching, writing poetry, and keeping dream diaries.
Those who prefer Hoffman’s more cosmic, esoteric, mystical designs will appreciate the Mara Hoffman Rug ($128 to $1898 at Anthropologie.com), which features an all-seeing eye, a nod to the evil eye motifs that have been found for centuries on Nazars and Hamsa hand amulets in hopes of warding off negative energy and evil spirits. Made of wool with a cotton lining, this rug comes in an array of sizes: 2′ x 3′ ($128), 3′ x 5′ ($298), 4′ x 6′ ($498), 5′ x 7′ ($798), 6′ x 9′ ($1298), 8′ x 10′ ($1498), and 9′ x 12′ ($1898).
For a cheekier take on the evil eye motif, check out the Mara Hoffman Eye Pillow ($68 at Anthropologie.com), the perfect way to add some personality to your sofa, chaise, futon, or armchair. Measuring 18 square inches, this pillow features a geometric pattern centered on the evil eye, with parts of its melon-colored pupils appearing along the corners of the pillow to create a kaleidoscopic feel.
