Golden Globes 2011 Recap — 5 Dresses That Lit Up The Red Carpet
The 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards, held on Sunday, January 16th, saw comedian Ricky Gervais return to the podium, this time armed with even sharper barbs aimed at nominees, guests, and event organizers. Though last year’s repertoire included some potentially incendiary jokes, Gervais pushed the limits to unwise heights this time around, alienating some attendees, who have publicly criticized him as a mean-spirited comedian. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association confirmed that Gervais would not be hosting any future award ceremonies, denouncing his televised shenanigans and apologizing to those who were offended by his brand of comedy.
Aside from Gervais’ antics, the evening offered major wins for The Social Network (which nabbed four prizes, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Best Screenplay), Natalie Portman (who won Best Actress for her excellent performance in Black Swan), Colin Firth (awarded Best Actor for his portrayal of King George VI of Britain in The King’s Speech), and Christian Bale (who won Best Supporting Actor for his outstanding work in The Fighter).
On the fashion front, the 2011 Golden Globes were pretty tame, with more misses than hits — from Katey Segal’s long-sleeved, satin, paprika orange gown, which looked like something a Sugarbaker woman would’ve worn to a big gala on Designing Women; to Lea Michele’s cumbersome, one-shoulder bubblegum pink dress, possibly a modified prom gown; Christina Aguilera’s skin-tight, nude-and-black, strapless lace gown with its bed skirt-like tail, which looked like a gift from Fredrick’s of Hollywood; and Julianne Moore’s fuchsia Lanvin gown, which had a single long sleeve ballooning at her shoulder and practically consuming her figure.
Still, there were a few shining fashion moments when old Hollywood glamour once again reigned supreme. Here, a breakdown of our top five favorite looks.
1. ANGELINA JOLIE
Nominated for The Tourist, Angelina Jolie ditched her signature black gowns and opted for a slightly Atelier Versace emerald green column dress encrusted with Swarovski crystals and featuring slim-fitting long sleeves, a demure half-moon neckline that revealed her collarbones for a hint of understated sexiness, and a fitted high waistline creating a bit of puckering along the bodice for a slightly vintage effect.
2. EVA LONGORIA
Eat your heart out, Tony Parker! Fresh from her marital split, La Longoria showed why she’s the loveliest woman on Wisteria Lane in a magnificent, black Zac Posen gown with flirtatious cap sleeves, a sweetheart neckline showing off a it of decolletage, a dramatic fish tail, and a black ribbon tie along the waist with a glimmering brooch.
3. ANNE HATHAWAY
Rachel Zoe did it again! After scoring a major coup with client Anne Hathaway at the 2009 Oscars, when the actress donned a statuesque Armani Privé number, Zoe once again turned to Armani for a showstopping look. This time around, she outfitted Hathaway in a long-sleeved, champagne rose, snug-as-a-glove Giorgio Armani Privé dress with head-to-toe pailletes and Swarovski crystals, slightly puffed shoulders, and an open back.
4. MILA KUNIS
The former That ’70s Show star, nominated for a Best Supporting prize thanks to her work in Black Swan, was far from an ugly duckling at this year’s Golden Globes. She wore an expertly draped, one-shoulder, emerald green gown with a fitted bodice, slinky train and a hint of ruching at the shoulder. Vera Wang created the stunning dress in only four days after Kunis expressed an interest in the gown based on a preliminary sketch. Talk about pressure making diamonds!
5. LEIGHTON MEESTER
Even Blair Waldorf would approve of this romantic, ethereal look. A presenter for the evening, Meester wore a Burberry Prorsum nude-colored, slightly sheer, floral print dress with a dramatic slit that revealed her perfectly toned stems and slightly puckered sleeves adding a fairy tale-ready femininity. Her hair styled in soft waves and her feet clad in golden Jimmy Choo heels, the Country Strong star hit all the right notes.
