The Scoop on Charlize Theron’s Beauty Look at the Oscars 2014
It’s hard to believe anyone ever managed to make Charlize Theron look less than stunning — and yes, I’m referencing the intensive hours the makeup team on the set of 2003’s Monster must have logged in order to transform the South African stunner into Aileen Wuornos. After all, Charlize can wear her blonde hair straight, dye it jet black, cut it into a chin-length bob, curl it, straighten it, or chop it off and rock a mean pixie — and she’ll look good in any scenario. Heck, she might be able to make a mullet work!
Last night, Charlize once again proved that she has the face to flaunt an über short hairdo. In fact, her Oscars beauty look revolved around the pixie cut as makeup artist Pati Dubroff and hair stylist Enzo Angileri collaborated to create a Twiggy-inspired, Mod-flavored look with a modern twist.
On the makeup front, Pati Dubroff, working for Dior Beauty, prioritized the eyes, exaggerating Theron’s lashes and piling on the liner, while keeping the rest of the look very soft and muted. To give her face coverage while keeping the look soft, Dubroff started by applying the Dior Pore Minimizer Skin Refining Matte Primer, then smoothed on the Dior Capture Totale Triple Correcting Serum Foundation in Light Beige, which offers fluid coverage while also helping to even skin tone, mixing it with the Dior Glow Maximizer Light Boosting Primer to give the skin a dewy, lit-from-within radiance. On Theron’s eyes, Dubroff used the Dior Backstage Eye Prime, and then applied a hint of color to lids with the Dior 5 Couleurs Eyeshadow Palette in Incognito (#030), which includes five neutral shades including a matte nude beige, a light shimmering silver, a shimmering bronzed gold, a matte ecru hue, and a light gold with greenish undertones. The true drama was achieved via the liner, the Diorshow Art Pen Intense Professional Felt-Tip Eyeliner in Catwalk Black, which was applied along the uppers lashline and extended to the inner corners of eyes for a graphic effect, along with the Diorshow Black Out Mascara in Kohl Black, which intensified and volumized lashes to create that spidery look we’ve come to associate with ’60s Mod girls.
To keep the attention on Charon’s eyes, Dubroff opted for a minimalist lip look, dabbing on just a touch of the Dior Addict Fluid Stick in Frisson (launching in May), a sheer peach shade.
Moving on to Theron’s hair, stylist Enzo Angileri, working for Wella Professionals, opted for a very simple look. He started by washing and conditioning the actress’s hair with the Wella Professionals Brilliance Shampoo and Conditioner, then applied the Wella Professionals Natural Volume Mousse to her strands, working it from the roots to the tips. Next, he used a blow dryer on medium heat to dry her hair, using a brush to discourage any waves or curls from appearing, instead flattening the hair so it would remain close to her scalp. Once hair was almost dry, he took a few drops of the Wella Professionals Oil Reflections and, after massaging it in between his palms, he applied it to Theron’s hair using his fingertips, thereby boosting shine. He then continued drying Theron’s strands and, once fully dry, he finished the ‘do with the Wella Professionals Stay Essential Finishing Spray, lightly spraying along the front of the hair to prevent any frizz or flyaways from appearing.
