“Now that’s what I call buttery!”

Those are the words my precocious 9-year-old son uttered enthusiastically when he glided his finger over the smooth surface of the new NIVEA Vanilla & Macadamia Kiss Lip Butter ($3.99 at most food, drug, and mass market retailers). Once he smelled the lip moisturizer, he turned to me and, without missing a beat, asked, “Can I eat it?” The answer, of course, was no. But my little guy had summarized some of the lip butter’s attributes in that brief exchange. First, its texture is divine: practically whipped and churned yet having a melt-on-your-mouth quality. Second, its scent is smell is positively irresistible: the sweetness of vanilla fused with a nutty aroma for a scent that will remind you of white chocolate macadamia cookies and almond biscotti. In fact, the sweet, confectionary quality of the lip butter’s scent will make anyone’s mouth water — not just a treat-seeking nine-year-old.

Over the summer, I extolled the virtues of the NIVEA Raspberry Rosé Kiss Lip Butter and, while I still adore that product, I have to confess the Vanilla & Macadamia Kiss Lip Butter has bumped the former from its top spot — simply due to its patisserie-worthy scent.

Like all previous Nivea lip butters, this one contains a trifecta of fatty acid-rich, moisturizing, softening natural ingredients. First, there’s shea butter, which is rife with omega-9 fatty acids like oleic acid (which account for an estimated 40-60% of its fatty acid composition), which is known to go beyond the epidermis and penetrate the deeper layers of  the skin for long-lasting hydration. Because shea butter melts at body temperature, it never feels thick, heavy, or gunky once smoothed onto skin — whether you’re applying it to your limbs or your lips. Next, there’s sweet almond oil, which is rich in vitamin A —known to stimulate cellular regeneration, promote natural exfoliation, and boost collagen and elastin production — and vitamin E, a natural antioxidant that protects the skin from free radical damage, neutralizing harmful UV rays. But sweet almond’s chemical composition is made up primarily of oleic acid which, as mentioned before, easily penetrates the skin for longer-lasting hydration without leaving behind any greasy residue. Last, but not least, there’s castor oil, which contains ricinoleic acid, an unsaturated omega-9 fatty acid that also moisturizes and softens the skin. Together, these ingredients work to smooth and hydrate your pout.

And, unlike other lip balms and lip moisturizes, the Nivea Vanilla & Macadamia Kiss Lip Butter feels indulgent, heightening the pleasure you’ll feel when applying it onto lips. Much like when you rub a body soufflé onto your legs and arms, this creamy lip moisturizer feels like it’s caressing your lips, giving them a kiss of moisture and, in turn, giving you the ability to bestow the sweetest, softest kisses on those you love.
