Kerry Washington Shines at the 2013 Emmy Awards — Get the Scoop on her Dress, Jewels, Makeup, and More!
Last night’s 2013 Emmy Awards was a bit of a snoozefest — there were the seemingly endless song-and-dance numbers (and, as someone who loathes musicals, these were enough to make me wince), the “upsets” that seemed designed to shock rather than to commend outstanding actors (Jeff Daniels over Bryan Cranston? What’s-his-name over Aaron Paul? Please!), and the needless categories (this reality stuff has to stop!). Still, I enjoyed watching E!’s Red Carpet Live coverage — that is, until I realized they were going to finish the taping without interviewing the stunning Kerry Washington and giving viewers a 360-degree look of her gorgeous gown. If they’d missed any ol’ body, that would be one thing, but to omit the best-dressed woman of the evening? That’s unforgivable!
And, without question, Kerry Washington was the belle of the ball last night at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, wearing an ethereal, romantic Marchesa gown in layers of blush tulle. Golden lace along the bodice was exposed ever so slightly, creating a camisole-like look along the décolletage. Most of this golden lace, however, was tucked under a sheer white lace fabric trimmed with white ribbons which, in turn, created a harness-like structure, adding straps to the gown and banding around the waist, with the effect reminiscent of a corset with a balconette bra. White rosettes and petals completed the glamorous but sensual feel of the décolletage, a theme that was completed in the remainder of the gown, which featured a frothy skirt embellished with lush rosettes and embroidered petals and branches.
ACCESSORIES:
Washington accessorized with Christian Louboutin shoes, an Edie Parker clutch, a Movado watch, and pink diamond and rose gold flower cluster earrings from Fred Leighton, along with a 18kt rose gold and white gold ring with oval pink diamonds and round brilliant-cut white diamonds (also from Fred Leighton).
MAKEUP:
Makeup artist Carola Gonzalez was so inspired by the Marchesa gown’s ethereal feel, that she decided to create an equally delicate but beautiful makeup look, focusing on velvety matte skin, luminous cheeks, purple lids, and a hint of pink color along the pout.
Gonzalez started by prepping Washington’s skin with the Hourglass Cosmetics Veil Mineral Primer ($52 at Sephora.com), applying the Hourglass Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation ($55 at Sephora.com) immediately thereafter. To hide any dark circles, blemishes, or imperfections, she used the Clé de Peau concealer in honey. To highlight Washington’s gorgeous bone structure, Gonzalez swept the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Radiant Light ($35 at Sephora.com) along her cheekbones, forehead, nose, and chin. Next, she brushed the Lancôme Blush Subtil in Sparkling Rose on the apples of her cheeks to give her look a coquettish feel.
Moving on to the eyes, Gonzalez filled in Washington’s brows with the Hourglass Arch Brow Sculpting Pencil in Dark Brunette ($32 at Sephora.com). Next, she brushed the mauve shimmer eye shadow color in the Hourglass Visionnaire Eye Shadow Duo in Exhibition ($38 at Sephora.com) to the inner corners eyes of the eyes and all along the lids, brushing the darker eggplant shimmer shade to the outer corners of the eyes and delicately brushing it below the bottom lash line. Next, she blended both of these shades together and lined eyes with the Hourglass Script Precision Liquid Liner in Jett ($32 at Sephora.com). Three coats of Hourglass Film Noir Fill Spectrum Mascara ($28at Sephora.com) completed the eye look.
Lips, meanwhile, were understated and near bare. Gonzalez started by moisturizing lips with the Hourglass No. 28 Lip Treatment Oil ($42 at Sephora.com), then applied the Hourglass Extreme Sheen High Shine Lip Gloss in Truth ($28 at Sephora.com), a beige rose shade.
HAIR:
For a classic look, celebrity hairstylist Marcus Francis opted to give Washington bouncy, shiny waves. He started by giving her strands a deep conditioning, shine-boosting treatment, applying the Leonor Greyl Masque Quintessence ($145 at Folica.com) to damp hair for 15 minutes, then rinsing it off and cleansing strands with the Leonor Greyl Shampooing Reviviscence ($67 at Nordstrom.com).
After towel drying her hair, Francis sprayed the Leonor Greyl Condition Naturelle ($36 at Folica.com) on strands, from roots to ends, in order to give her hair volume and protect it from heat styling tools. After combing the product through, he applied the Mousse Au Lotus Volumatrice ($46 at Nordstrom.com) to her ends for even more bounce. Using a medium size round brush, he blow-dried her hair and created an off-center part.
Next, he used a large velcro roller and rolled the hair at the crown to achieve greater height in this area. To create soft waves, Francis used a 1 1/4″ curling iron and, taking 2″ sections of hair, spritzing each piece with Leonor Greyl Voluforce Styling Spray ($36 at Nordstrom.com) and curling every single section, pinning it vertically. For the sections framing the face, he took the curling iron and wrapped the layers just once to create a slight bend at eye level, letting the bend set without pinning,
Ten minutes later, he unpinned all the sections and, with a Mason Pearson paddle brush, brushed out all the hair, softening the curls and transforming them into undulating waves. Next, he undid the velcro roller at the top, along the crown and brushed the hair backwards. Using a quarter-sized dollop of the Leonor Greyl Éclat Naturel ($46 at Nordstrom.com) styling cream, he tended to the ends of her hair and smoothed out any unwanted frizz. He then tucked the front sections of her hair behind her hair, securing them with a bobby pin. Last but not least, he spritzed the Leonor Greyl Spray Structure Naturelle ($38 at Folica.com) all over her head to give the look touchable hold.
