Matte Orange Lips, Strong Brows, and Multi-Textured, Grungy Hair at Rag & Bone SS14 Show
The era of the bold lip seems to be in full swing, with many designers and makeup artists joining forces to create vibrant matte pouts for their Spring 2014 runway shows. This was certainly the case at Rag & Bone, where Revlon‘s Global Artistic Director Gucci Westman created a strong matte lip in a reddish orange hue inspired by the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil and by the vibrant spirit of Carnival. This strong lip was paired with bold brows and a smudged, lived-in eye look meant to create a just-rolled-out-of-bed-and-forgot-to-take-my-makeup-off-last-night vibe.
To give the models natural-looking skin that was luminous but still believable, Westman applied the Revlon PhotoReady BB Cream onto their faces, highlighting and sculpting the face using the Revlon Skinlights Face Illuminator in Pink Light (hitting shelves January 2014). For a slight sun-kissed rosiness along the cheeks, he applied Revlon Illuminance Cream Shadow in Not Just Nudes using diagonal strokes to do so.
The eye look, meanwhile, was heavier on liner than anything else. Westman applied Revlon ColorStay Liquid Liner in Black to better define the lash line and then layered Revlon’s Luxurious Color Eyeliner in Black Velvet atop it. To add a grunge-y feel, he smoothed the Revlon ColorStay ShadowLinks (new for January 2014) in Charcoal, Onyx, and Cocoa, then haphazardly wiped the color off, leaving behind some traces of the color for a smudged, lived-in vibe.
Brows were strong and pronounced, filled in with the Revlon Color Star Brow Pencil that best matched each model’s natural hair color. The brow hairs were brushed up to create a stronger overall look.
To create the statement lip, Westman used two products: the Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Carnival (part of the Spring/Summer 2014 collection) and the Revlon ColorBurst Matte Balm in Mischievous (the product category is debuting in January 2014), blending them together and applying the color with a lip brush for greater precision.
The hair look for the Rag & Bone Spring 2014 show was also a modern interpretation of the downtown “it” girl. Redken Creative Consultant Guido created the look, which emphasized a juxtaposition of textures, with a shellacked finish along the top of the head and a softer finish through the ends. The stark contrast of textures gives the look a grunge element that feels modern and in keeping with the sort of stylish recklessness we associate with edgy downtown girls.
To create the look, Guido started by applying the Redken Satinwear 02 Prepping Blow-Dry Lotion to damp hair, working it from roots to ends. Next, he created a clean center part and began blow-drying hair, stopping along the mid-lengths and leaving the lower half of the hair damp so that it could air dry and have a different texture. The top of the head and the upper mid section of strands, then, looked sleek and pin-straight while the lower half of strands looked a bit wavier and even slightly scragglier.
Next, Guido sprayed the Redken Forceful 23 Super-Strength Finishing Spray along the center part to give it a super crisp finish and eliminate any fly-aways. Last, he blow-dried this section to set the hairspray and bring out the product’s shine.
