Our Picks for Best Dressed at the 2013 Golden Globe Awards
The red carpet at the 2013 Golden Globe Awards was dominated by glamorous looks inspired by some of the season’s most poignant fashion trends: from Helmut Newton-inspired black-and-white gowns to dresses in vibrant and daring shades of red, and frocks with sheer panels of lace cleverly placed to create a playful and slightly naughty contrast between sheerness and opacity. JULIANNE MOORE
The red-headed stunner outshone most of the buzzed-about, up-and-coming actresses and singers (including Taylor Swift and the entire cast of HBO’s Girls) in a sleek, floor-length Tom Ford gown. From its straight, column-like, floor-length skirt to the clever placing of white stripes along the sides of the skirt and the quirky white triangle accentuating Moore’s waistline, this demure gown accentuated managed to feel modern but timeless. A straight neckline, long and slim-fitting sleeves and strong shoulders give the minimalist number a more imposing presence while the open back shows an unexpected amount of skin, giving the gown a risqué touch. Chandelier earrings and Bulgari bracelets completed her winning ensemble.
JENNIFER LOPEZ
La Lopez is no stranger to revealing a little skin — in fact, one could argue that she’s mastered the art of peek-a-boo dressing, revealing bits of flesh or creating the illusion of nudity yet doing so in a manner that feels tasteful and utterly glamorous. The Zuhair Murad gown she wore to the 2013 Golden Globes was no exception. Crafted out of ivory lace with a nude underlay and boasting beaded details, the long-sleeved number accentuated Lopez’s famous curves while the lace patterns were positioned perfectly so as to cover her, uhm, naughty bits.
NICOLE KIDMAN
In recent years, Kidman had seemed to abandon her passion for fashion, making more than a handful of questionable choices on the red carpet — a surprising turn of events for the statuesque woman who once dominated every award ceremony’s “Best Dressed” list. It was reassuring, then, when Kidman arrived at the Golden Globe Awards in a daring, sleeveless, black Alexander McQueen gown featuring golden embroidery along the bodice, sheer black fabric with starburst-like stitching along the waist region, and a low-cut black skirt that flared just the slightest bit along the hemline.Manolo Blahnik heels, a Roger Vivier clutch, and Fred Leighton earrings and bracelets completed her glam ensemble.
MARION COTILLARD
The French actress, nominated for her role in Rust and Bone, proved that less can be more in a vermilion Christian Dior Couture dress. Unlike the other stars who opted for floor-length numbers, Cotillard took a risk on a shorter dress with an asymmetrical hemline extending from above one knee to below the other ankle. The strapless number seemed to nod to ancient Greece with its draped bodice, which included a loose panel of fabric on one side, while accentuating her figure via a black waistband.
KATE HUDSON
Black doesn’t have to be boring, folks! One of the most striking looks of the evening: Kate Hudson’s long-sleeved Alexander McQueen gown, which featured a high banded collar covered with golden embroidery that dispersed outward along the shoulders for a positively regal effect. A dramatic cut-out along the center of the chest region teased onlookers, while a wide belt with gold, leaf-like shapes facing in opposite directions completed the gilded effect.
JESSICA CHASTAIN
Zero Dark Thirty actress Jessica Chastain was among the few stars who opted for a gown in a color other than nude, white, black, or red this year. Her light, sky blue Calvin Klein Collection halter gown felt light and ethereal, plus the frock’s shade complemented her red mane. Featuring a plunging neckline and slight pin-tuck details below the waist, this airy gown made Chastain look like she was floating as she traipsed along the red carpet.
EVA LONGORIA
Forget Angelina Jolie’s wayward leg! This year, Eva Longoria gave Jolie a run for her money in a custom-made Emilio Pucci gown featuring a lace bodice, long sleeves, a provocative center cut-out along the chest, and an ample skirt made of layers of black chiffon with a deliciously high slit along the side.
HALLE BERRY
When you’re as gorgeous as Halle Berry, you can pretty much wear a paper bag and still look better than anyone around you. But Halle never misses an opportunity to show off her fashion acumen — or her athletic but feminine figure. This time around, she flaunted her toned legs in a one-shoulder Versace Atelier dress featuring a sky-high side slit and a chiffon overlay on the opposite side to create a trailing train.
JESSICA ALBA
Though her furry clutch reminded us of a Muppet, Jessica Alba stunned in a melon-toned, strapless Oscar de la Renta gown with a mermaid-like tale. A V-shaped diamond necklace provided just the right amount of sparkle to complement this look, which was given an old Hollywood twist thanks to Alba’s Veronica Lake-inspired hairstyle, with its side part and delicate waves.
KERRY WASHINGTON
Django Unchained actress Kerry Washington always looks impeccable — whether she’s in a billowing, floral print Oscar de la Renta number, a fuchsia satin gown with a plunging V-shaped neckline, or a strapless yellow chiffon gown. This time around, she dazzled in a slightly retro-flavored, strapless Miu Miu dress featuring a nude mini dress base with a V-shaped neckline and an ankle-length sheer mesh nude overlay with silver-toned beadwork arranged in large feather-like shapes. A rounded neckline and banded waist added an unexpectedly Mod touch to the ensemble, which Washington kept minimalist with her nude Prada clutch and pointy-toed pumps.
