Look of the Day: Crossover Front Dress, Knee-High Boots, And Ethnic Jewelry Galore!
Yesterday was one of those days when I felt a bit like the Road Runner, dashing from appointment to meeting to press showcase to dinner event like a maniac. Fortunately for me, no one was trying to drop a 16-ton Acme Corporation weight on me while I was doing so! In any case, given that my schedule was so jam-packed, I knew I had to pick sensible shoes (or quasi-sensible ones, at least!), so I went for a pair of knee-high black leather boots from Modern Vintage that feature a chunky heel (as opposed to the many five- and six-inch stiletto heels in my closet) and a fun fold-over cuff. And, since it was a bit chilly in the morning, I decided to wear a long-sleeved dress: specifically, the Tart Cape Cod dress (purchased at Hautelook.com during a huge Tart sale they had), a body-hugging jersey knit piece which features a crossover front and ruching detail along the side. The dress has a really cool print that reminds me of the cracks you see in old brick structures, but the color is a deep red with a bit of a wine tint as opposed to the baked terracotta shade we associate with bricks, making it a perfect hue for autumn. And, of course, since I tend to get cold so easily, I made sure to wear a pair of semi-sheer black tights with a bit of texture.
Since no outfit of mine would be complete without the accessories (you ladies know how I do!), I then started selecting which pieces to wear. I was in a statement necklace type of mood, so I instantly gravitated to my Fiona Paxton Lane Necklace, which has a harness-like shape. The piece looks really hefty, but it’s incredibly lightweight, featuring oxidized brass beads embroidered to a black mesh panel along the main collar section, which wraps around the back of the neck and then hangs down either side of the chest, and at the slim center vertical strip, which is attached to the main collar via a series of draped brass chains. Anyhow, since the necklace was such a focal point, I kept the rest of the accessories fairly understated. I love House of Harlow 1960 jewelry, so I actually chose two pieces from the line. The first was my House of Harlow 1960 Aztec Bangle with Coral Leather, which features a rich red backdrop with pyramid and arrow designs adorning the bangle’s periphery. The bracelet retails for $80 at BoutiqueToYou.com, but I purchased it many years ago, back when Nicole Richie was first releasing her line at Kitson in Los Angeles. I had gotten a sneak peek at the collection and I pre-ordered two of the pieces in that debut collection: this bangle and the leather starburst ring (which is a favorite to this day). The other jewelry piece I wore was the House of Harlow 1960 Engraved Bar Pave Earrings, which I purchased during a Bargain Bin Sale at BoutiqueToYou.com but which you can score for $65 at Endless.com. The yellow gold-plated earrings feature funky cut-out designs with pavé-set stones, and they feel a bit weathered and aged, in keeping with the line’s vintage Bohemian vibe.
