Smudged Black Liner, Flesh-Toned Lips, And Messy Waves At Rebecca Taylor Fall 2010 Show
Dark eyes and nude lips have been ruling the runway for Fall 2010, though there have been various iterations of this combination. Still, most of the hair and makeup looks we’ve been seeing during New York Fashion Week have trumpeted a messier, more unkempt aesthetic, an easy, effortless cool that’s very downtown girl. For the Rebecca Taylor Fall 2010 show, MAC Cosmetics’ key makeup artist Rie Omoto aimed for a “feminine but tough” look with a distinctively confident, take-no-prisoners attitude.
Omoto says the key element was thick eye liner smudged onto the lids so that it deliberately appeared imperfect and felt a bit lived in. To give the look a sloppier, messier feel, Omoto and her team applied MAC’s Fluidline liner in Blacktrack, which has a gel-like texture, close to the lash line and along the eyelid, following up with the MAC Pro Paintstick in Black along the inner part of the lid to add a creamy consistency against the other liner’s shininess. To contour the eyes, the makeup artists brushed on MAC’s Eye Shadow in Coquette along the inner crease, and, of course, tons of mascara was applied to lashes in order to give the eyes more dimension and kick. On the face, meanwhile, they applied the Studio Sculpt Concealer, the Mineralize Skinfinish powder, and the Cream Color Base in Pearl as a blush to illuminate the area. Lastly, the MAC Lip Erase in Dim was applied onto lips so as to neutralize any pink or red tones and give the pout a flesh-toned color.
Rebecca Taylor relied on Rudi Lewis for Cutler Salon to lead the hair team. For the runway show, Lewis decided to create a very effortless, slightly messy, just-rolled-out-of-bed look, with slightly wavy, tousled tresses styled in a haphazard manner, with no part created and no excessive styling. According to Lewis, the look was inspired by the gender-bending, effortlessly chic personal style of ’70s icon Jane Birkin.
